The Washington Commanders are expected to make "sweeping changes" this offseason from the coaching staff to the front office, and it appears the franchise is already eyeing some general manager candidates.
Commanders owner Josh Harris has already met with Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham, according to ESPN's John Keim.
Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, bought the Commanders from Dan Snyder for a record-setting $6.05 billion in July.
Snyder brought in the current regime of general manager Martin Mayhew and head coach Ron Rivera and his staff. When the sale of the franchise was completed, changes were widely expected to be made by Harris.
Harris spent the 2023 campaign observing the football operations, and the team is currently 4-12 and will miss the playoffs for the third straight year and the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
With changes expected to be made, the Commanders used the trade deadline to stockpile some assets by dealing Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers and Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears.
Washington landed a 2024 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick in those deals.
The franchise's next general manager will be tasked with building the best on-field product the fanbase has seen since the 80s and early 90s, and while that's a big ask, it certainly seems Harris is ready to lend his support in pursuit of winning a title.
Kelly served as Las Vegas' assistant general manager from 2022 until he took over as interim general manager this season after the Raiders fired David Ziegler following an embarrassing 63-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14.
Kelly got his NFL start as a college scout for the Denver Broncos in 2007. He was promoted to assistant coordinator of pro and college scouting in 2008 and served in the role through 2009 before taking over as the team's assistant director of pro personnel from 2010-2014.
In 2015, Kelly was hired by the Bears as director of pro scouting, remaining in the role through 2016 before serving as assistant director of player personnel from 2017-2021.
Cunningham, meanwhile, has been assistant general manager of the Bears since 2022. He got his NFL start as a scout for the Baltimore Ravens in 2008.
The Philadelphia Eagles hired Cunningham as their director of college scouting in 2017 and he remained in the role through 2019 before being elevated to assistant director of player personnel.
Cunningham served as assistant director of player personnel through 2021 until taking over as the franchise's director of player personnel, remaining in the role until January 2022.
While Kelly and Cunningham appear to be candidates for Washington's general manager position, the search is sure to be exhaustive.
