Joe Burrow: Ja'Marr Chase Not Practicing Didn't Impact Bengals In Shock Patriots Loss

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow denied the idea the contract drama surrounding wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase played a role in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the New England Patriots.

"No, I wouldn't say that's accurate," Burrow told reporters when asked whether the offense was adversely impacted by Chase "holding in" and missing a significant portion of training camp while making it clear he wanted a new deal.

Leading up to Week 1, Chase's status was even in doubt and his availability was considered a "game-time decision" by the weekend. While he did suit up, he was held in check for the most part by New England, finishing with six catches for 62 yards.

After the game, the three-time Pro Bowler said he was dealing with food poisoning on Saturday.

Chase is coming off a solid 2023 season in which he caught 100 passes for 1,216 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. And thanks to the three years before that, he has proven himself as an elite wideout.

Still, even the best players at their position can be affected when they don't go though their usual preseason preparations.

Despite Burrow's comments otherwise, fans are bound to question whether Chase's firm stance on wanting an extension from Cincinnati will carry a cost early into the season.
