NBA Rumors: James Harden Won't Make Clippers Debut vs. LeBron James, Lakers

James Harden's Los Angeles Clippers debut won't be happening Wednesday night, but it's reportedly coming soon.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium said Harden will not play Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers, but he could make his debut as soon as Monday's game in New York against the Knicks.

The 76ers traded Harden, P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the Clippers early Tuesday morning for Marcus Morris, Robert Covington, Nic Batum, KJ Martin, a 2026 first-round pick via the Oklahoma City Thunder, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks and a 2029 pick swap.

The move ended a monthslong saga that began in June when Harden demanded a trade amid frustration with Sixers management. Harden, who had a decade-long relationship with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, became incensed over the team's lack of urgency in offering him a new contract ahead of the free-agency period.

Frustrated by a seeming lack of interest from the Sixers and a limited open market, Harden opted into his $35.6 million player option and pushed for a trade to the Clippers. Morey spent months shopping Harden in an attempt to extract as much value as possible out of the 2018 NBA MVP but found tepid interest.

The Clippers were the only team to express a consistent desire to land Harden, who has now requested trades from three organizations in less than three calendar years. Stuck with a declining star with a reputation as a malcontent who falls short in the playoffs, Morey traded Harden on Tuesday in a deal that amounts to getting pennies on the dollar.

Harden will now team with Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook as part of a veteran, star-laden core that has a finite window to compete for championships. Harden and Westbrook will be an interesting dynamic together, having now teamed together three separate times, but this will be the first time they'll be doing so on the decline of their careers.
