Lakers Rumors: New D'Angelo Russell Contract Wanted By 'Corners of the Organization'

Erin Walsh

While D'Angelo Russell didn't have the best postseason, it appears his play in the 2023 NBA playoffs has not deterred everyone within the Los Angeles Lakers organization from the idea of re-signing him this summer.

"I actually think there are corners of the organization that would still like D'Angelo Russell back just because they have a void at that position," ESPN's Zach Lowe said on his The Lowe Post podcast. "They need a point guard."

However, Lowe added he doesn't think the Lakers have given up on potentially signing Kyrie Irving.

"I don't think they have shut the door completely on Kyrie coming to the Lakers at some point," Lowe said. "Just because it doesn't happen this summer doesn't mean it can't ever happen. I don't think that door is closed."

The Lakers acquired Russell at the 2022-23 season's trade deadline in a three-team deal that also included the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz.

In 17 regular-season games with the franchise, the 27-year-old averaged 17.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and 41.4 percent from deep.

After a rough start to the year, Russell was one of the key acquisitions that helped the Lakers make a push for the playoffs.

However, Russell's play dipped in the postseason as he averaged just 13.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 16 games while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and 31.0 percent from beyond the arc.

As the Purple and Gold made it further into the postseason, Russell's play continued to decline. In four games against the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, he averaged a disappointing 6.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 32.3 percent from the floor and 13.3 percent from deep.

While it sounds like some members of the organization are keen on keeping Russell, Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported on May 31 that the Lakers "would prefer" to use the veteran in a sign-and-trade.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin also reported May 26 that the Lakers "will not pursue" a max extension with Russell this summer. He's eligible to sign a two-year, $67.5 million extension by June 30.

Russell will be one of the biggest decisions the franchise needs to make this summer. If the Lakers don't re-sign him, it's unclear how they would replace him as Dennis Schröder is also a free agent this summer and could depart the organization.

While Irving is believed to be an option, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Monday that sources close to the star point guard said he "has consistently expressed a desire to remain a Maverick and actually wants to shut down the notion that he's angling to get to L.A."

Beyond Russell, the Lakers are reportedly prioritizing contracts for Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.
