NBA Rumors: Jonathan Kuminga, Warriors Don't Reach Contract Extension Before Deadline

Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors did not reach an agreement on a contract extension before Monday's deadline, per The Athletic's Anthony Slater.

Kuminga remains a projected starter for Wednesday's season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers despite his now-uncertain future in Golden State, Slater noted.

The news comes after Shams Charania (then of The Athletic) and Slater reported on Jan. 5 that Kuminga had "lost faith" in longtime head coach Steve Kerr and he "no longer believes Kerr will allow him to reach his full potential."

Action Network's Matt Moore added on Jan. 21 that the Dubs were "willing to part with the unhappy Jonathan Kuminga."

Slater and Charania had previously reported on May 13, 2023, that Kuminga would've preferred a trade last summer if he wasn't going to have a bigger role in Golden State in 2023-24.

He ultimately recorded career highs across the board with 74 games played, 46 starts and averages of 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

The 22-year-old was reportedly frustrated with his dwindling role in the 2023 playoffs. He averaged just 6.1 minutes per game across 10 postseason contests and didn't appear in three games altogether.

However, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said during an appearance on Tim Kawakami's podcast that Kuminga would have been able to earn more playing time by becoming more versatile.

"He's a four," Kerr said of Kuminga. "For him to take the next step, he needs to be able to play the three as an offensive player. He can play the three defensively; he can guard, really, one through four. But offensively, to play the three you've got to be really skilled in this league today, you've gotta see the floor, you've gotta be able to make plays. And right now, I think he's much more of a four than he is a three on the offensive end."

Despite the reports and apparent frustration, Kuminga told reporters in February that his relationship with Kerr had improved following those comments, so it appeared both sides are ready to build for the future.

Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype then reported on June 24 that the Warriors would only consider trading Kuminga if he was included in a deal for an All-NBA player.

The Warriors selected Kuminga seventh overall in the 2021 draft, and he went on to have a solid rookie season, averaging 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 70 games while shooting 51.3 percent from the floor and 33.6 percent from deep.

His role grew slightly during the 2022-23 season, and he averaged 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 67 games while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor and 37.0 percent from beyond the arc.

He was particularly impressive during a 21-game stretch when Andrew Wiggins was away from the team due to a personal issue, averaging 13.2 points in 24.2 minutes per game.

However, Kuminga's role with the Warriors hasn't expanded much since last season as he often played off the bench behind Andrew Wiggins and averaged 26.3 minutes per game.

Now, Kuminga will be one of the more intriguing players who will become a restricted free agent next summer. He still has the potential to develop into a star in the NBA, and a strong performance over the 2024-25 campaign would go a long way toward boosting his chances for a big payday.
