UFC's Jon Jones Eyes Retirement After Stipe Miocic Fight, Open to Ngannou Bout

After ending his three-year hiatus at UFC 285 in March, Jon Jones' next fight could be his last as a mixed martial artist.

Speaking to Fox Sports Australia (h/t Farah Hannoun of MMA Junkie), Jones said his plan right now "is to have one more big fight against Stipe Miocic" and walk away after that:

"I think the Stipe fight will be plenty for me. I feel like I don't really have much to prove after beating Stipe Miocic. I've been in the game a long time and in fighter years, I'm an old guy. I've been training for a long time, I've been in the game for a long time and got some small injuries–I just really want to be around. Be around for my family, be around for my kids. I want to be able to play with my kids, and have a good head on my shoulders, and have joints that work. So I can see it coming to an end really soon, and I'm happy with that. I'm really proud of my career."

Jones did note if Francis Ngannou returns to UFC, it "would be worth entertaining not retiring" to take on that challenge. He also dismissed a fight against Sergei Pavlovich, saying "no one knows who he is," despite being a "huge challenge."

Ngannou and Jones have been very open about their desire to fight each other, but UFC has been unable to make the bout happen.

"For three years I tried to fight Jon Jones," Ngannou told ESPN's Brett Okamoto in March. "I did everything to have that fight. I wanted that fight, but not at any cost."

Ngannou is moving into boxing after his UFC contract expired in December 2022. He explained why he rejected a new deal from the promotion in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour in January.

"In that contract, I'm not free," he said (h/t Steven Marrocco of MMAFighting.com). "I'm not an independent contractor. I have no rights. I hand over all the power to you guys. I've seen in the past how you guys can utilize your power against me, and I don't want that."

Jones was previously involved in a contract dispute with UFC for a long time following his victory over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020.

UFC president Dana White told Danny Segura and John Morgan of MMA Junkie in May 2020 that Jones was seeking a payout similar to what Deontay Wilder for his second fight with Tyson Fury.

Per boxing journalist Dan Rafael, Wilder received a guarantee of at least $25 million plus a percentage of pay-per-view profits from that bout.

Jones and UFC eventually settled their issues when he agreed to fight Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight title at UFC 285. Bones won via submission in the first round in his first fight as a heavyweight.

White told reporters in April UFC was targeting a fall date for Jones' first title defense, with Miocic set to be his opponent.

UFC hasn't officially announced a show at Madison Square Garden this year. The promotion has held events at the world's most famous arena in November in each of the past two years.

Jones is arguably the most dominant fighter in mixed martial arts history. He is 27-1 with one no contest in 29 career matches, with his lone defeat coming on a via disqualification for illegal elbows in a fight against Matt Hamill he was in complete control of up to that point.
