Schefter: 'Real Chance' Colts Get Choice of Stroud, Richardson, Levis with 4th Pick

The Indianapolis Colts might have a number of quarterbacks to choose from with the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft after all.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on NFL Live on Monday that the Colts may get to pick from Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, Florida's Anthony Richardson and Kentucky's Will Levis with only Alabama's Bryce Young off the board.

"I think Indianapolis thinks there's a real chance right now that they can sit right where they are at four and get potentially the second quarterback in this draft," he said. "There's a chance we might not see a quarterback go at two or even three, and there might not be a team that trades up because the value in that isn't what we thought it would be."

It has been largely assumed leading up to the draft that Young and Stroud will go with the first two picks.

After all, both the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans need franchise quarterbacks, and the former even traded up with the Chicago Bears to land the first choice. The drama was expected to start with the No. 3 overall pick, which the Arizona Cardinals could use or move to a team in need of a quarterback.

It isn't particularly difficult to envision a scenario in which Young and Stroud go with those first two picks and a team that needs a quarterback trades with the Cardinals—who already have Kyler Murray—and leaves the Colts with whichever of the top four signal-callers remain at No. 4 overall.

However, Schefter's report provides some hope for Indianapolis fans hoping there will be more of an element of choice available with that selection.

The Colts have gone with temporary stopgaps at quarterback since Andrew Luck retired in Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz, Philip Rivers and Jacoby Brissett, and picking in the top five could help them change that with a true franchise signal-caller to build around.

Colts chairman and CEO Jim Irsay even tweeted a picture of the presumed top four quarterbacks, which only further suggested the team will be looking at that position come draft day:

Stroud, who was a Heisman Trophy finalist over the past two seasons and proved he can hit almost any throw at the college level, being available could be a game-changer for Indianapolis as it looks to establish itself as a contender in the AFC South.

If nothing else, the suggestion that every quarterback except for Young will be available at No. 4 on April 27 will take away the pressure to trade up to draft one as the front office assesses all its options.
