NFL Rumors: Kevin Byard, Titans at 'Crossroads' After Tennessee Proposed Pay Cut

Timothy Rapp

The Tennessee Titans and safety Kevin Byard are reportedly at an impasse in contract talks after the team requested he take a pay cut, per multiple reports.

Byard does not plan to reduce his pay but reportedly isn't seeking an exit:

Byard, 29, is both a two-time first-team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl selection.

He was excellent yet again in 2022, registering 108 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defensed. It was his second season with 100-plus tackles and his fifth season with at least four interceptions.

Byard was the team's third-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Titans fans have to feel uneasy with the direction of the organization this offseason. Taylor Lewan and Bud Dupree were released. The team has eschewed splashy signings for speculative, boom-or-bust players.

Michael Silver of Bally Sports reported that star running back Derrick Henry was being shopped during the NFL Scouting Combine. Albert Breer of The MMQB reported that the Titans weren't "actively shopping" Henry but were listening to offers (h/t Dov Kleiman).

It remains to be seen if Tennessee will part ways with the face of the franchise. Certainly, getting rid of its best offensive player and arguably its best defensive player in one offseason would be a major shock and a clear indication that the team felt its window of contention had expired and that it was transitioning to a rebuilding process.

So, the Byard situation is worth monitoring. If he doesn't agree to a pay cut and the Titans can't find a trade partner and release him, it will indicate a rebuild on the horizon, and a Henry trade might follow shortly.

Look away, Titans fans—this could be a tough couple of months.
