John Wall Rumors: Rockets Expected to Waive PG After Clippers Trade

Scott Polacek

John Wall played 40 games for the Houston Rockets during the 2020-21 season, but it doesn't seem like he will take the court again for the franchise following Thursday's trade.

After Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported Houston acquired the University of Kentucky product as part of a three-team deal with the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers, Kelly Iko of The Athletic reported the plan is for the Rockets to waive him.

This doesn't come as much of a surprise considering how vocal Wall was in the past about his displeasure with how his time in Houston unfolded.

Wall missed the 2019-20 campaign with a torn Achilles, and the Washington Wizards traded him to the Rockets ahead of the 2020-21 season. Yet he played just 40 games that season before he was shut down to protect his trade value, and he didn't take the court at all in 2021-22 as the team attempted to find a trade.

During an appearance on the Tidal League podcast in January, the point guard called his time on the Rockets "beyond trash" and said of the season he did play, "We were trying to lose on purpose, tanking."

There was a time when acquiring the 32-year-old would have been a significant move.

He became a franchise icon for the Wizards during the nine seasons he played with them, accumulating five All-Star selections, an All-NBA Third Team nod in 2016-17 and a All-Defensive Second Team honor in 2014-15.

His athleticism was nearly unmatched in the open floor, and defenders could rarely stay in front of him even in half-court sets. Washington reached the second round of the playoffs three times during his tenure.

Yet injuries have largely robbed him of his game-changing explosiveness. Houston buying out his contract will clear the way for him to join a contender, but whichever team signs him should not expect much more than backcourt depth.

Wall averaged 11.4 points, 5.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds in the 34 games he played this season for the Clippers.
