Backstage WWE Rumors: Latest on Lita, Cody Rhodes and More

Erik Beaston

Women's wrestling dominated this week's wrestling rumor mill, with the impending return of Hall of Famers to WWE television making headlines.

We witnessed the return of Lita on Monday's WWE Raw when she assisted Becky Lynch in defeating Bayley in a steel cage match, but might a certain other friend be making a comeback to further even the odds?

The answer to that question and more await in this latest collection of rumors, which also looks at Cody Rhodes and a reported new title that was in the works for The American Nightmare.

Lita and Another WWE Hall of Famer to Appear at Elimination Chamber?

The WWE Universe was surprised Monday night when Lita returned to help Becky Lynch in defeating Bayley inside a steel cage.

Twitter account WRKD Wrestling had the scoop on the Hall of Famer's comeback—credited as much by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select—and noted another surprise return in the near future:

Sapp highlighted a further spoiler in the tweet, adding credibility to the report:

Lynch partnering with Lita and Trish Stratus enhances the feud with Damage CTRL and gives WWE another star-studded match to a red-hot Elimination Chamber show, which will be headlined by Sami Zayn vs. Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Lita last competed a year ago at the same pay-per-view, where she pushed Lynch to the limit in a Raw Women's Championship match. Stratus has not wrestled since losing to Charlotte Flair at SummerSlam in 2019.

The proposed match would seem to suggest the babyfaces emerge victorious, but working against two of the most influential women in pro wrestling history will enhance the significance of a Damage CTRL faction that has been booked inconsistently and could use a boost.

How much ring rust exists in regard to Lita and Stratus will influence the quality of the contest, but Lynch and Bayley are among the best-ever women's wrestlers, while Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky have a track record of performing up to the moment dating back to their days in NXT.

Did WWE Devise a New Championship for Cody Rhodes?

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that WWE would have introduced a new championship for Cody Rhodes if The Rock had been able to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.

If that's not an indicator of the company's dedication to The American Nightmare, nothing is.

For the long-term success of WWE and Rhodes as a top-tier player, it is almost better that The Rock did not make the deal to appear at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1-2.

Rhodes has been presented as such a star that, while it would have been nice to crown him as the first champion of any sort, both he and his story have earned the right to culminate with the dethroning of Reigns for the first time in well over two years.

But what would this new championship have been called?

The former All Elite Wrestling vice president has expressed his desire to win the WWE title because it is the belt that eluded his father, Dusty. Would the culmination of his journey have been a failure had he won a WWE Galactic title? Or an inter-universal-continental world title?

All signs point to a resounding "yes" here.

Beating Reigns is the obvious payoff, but it is the right one and will only serve to provide WWE with the marquee babyface it has chased since the end of John Cena's full-time days.

Update on Toxic Attraction Breakup Angle

If you watched the closing moments of Tuesday's NXT, which saw Jacy Jane betray Gigi Dolin and bring to an end the dominance of Toxic Attraction, you may have noticed what appeared to be a few stiff, hard shots to the face and head of the latter.

Wrestling Observer Live's Bryan Alvarez (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats) reported that the segment, which left Dolin battered and bruised, featured a door that did not open as planned.

Rather than the door swinging outward and Dolin falling through, it remained closed, resulting in her head and face crashing into it. When Jane delivered a particularly nasty boot, she absorbed the brunt of it rather than pushing through and falling onto the mat.

While it certainly appeared painful, it also made for a more impactful angle that put heat on Jane. It also positioned Dolin as the sympathetic Marty Jannetty to her partner's egotistical and self-centered Shawn Michaels.

Hopefully for Dolin, her run with WWE nets her more success than her comparable predecessor with The Rockers, who struggled to find traction as a singles competitor.

Latest on Deonna Purrazzo's Impact Wrestling Contract

Impact Wrestling recently picked up an option on Deonna Purrazzo's contract, extending it through the remainder of 2023, Sapp reported.

"Fightful Select has learned that Impact Wrestling exercised the one year option they had on Deonna Purrazzo, and Purrazzo has not signed a new contract or deal with Impact," the report stated (h/t Wrestling News World).

Purrazzo is considered one of the best wrestlers in the industry and has done a great deal to enhance the Knockouts division within Impact. She has also made an appearance for AEW in a Ring of Honor Women's Championship defense against Mercedes Martinez.

The Virtuosa had previously been signed to WWE's NXT brand.

Needless to say, both AEW and WWE figure to be interested in the 28-year-old based on her resume of extraordinary in-ring performances against the likes of Mickie James, Taya Valkyrie, Mia Yim and others, all of whom have been better off for having shared the ring with her and vice versa.

Given the manner in which her WWE run ended, with little pomp or circumstance and limited opportunity, one would be inclined to lean more in the direction of AEW or another high-profile promotion before predicting a return to her previous employer.
