Woj: Kyrie Irving Wants Around 4-Year, $198.5M New Max Contract amid Trade Rumors

Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving, who has requested a trade, is seeking the four-year, $198.5 million maximum contract extension available for him to sign, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

"Irving, who is in the final year of a deal that pays him $36.9 million, has been seeking in the neighborhood of a four-year, $198.5 million maximum extension available to him until June 30, sources said. If Irving is traded, he is eligible to sign a two-year, $78.6 million extension with his new team until June 30."

Irving, an eight-time All-Star, is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game. He is in his fourth season with the Nets and 12th in the NBA.

Brian Lewis of the New York Post previously reported Irving's desire to get a four-year, $198.5 million deal. The Los Angeles Lakers, who have interest in Irving, per Wojnarowski, may be reticent to offer such a deal.

"The Lakers' position, from what I understand, is they've been interested in trading for Kyrie Irving but they're not so sure about trading for him and being obligated to give him a $200 million contract at season's end," ESPN's Brian Windhorst on Friday's edition of NBA Today:

The Irving trade request creates a tough spot for anyone involved. The Nets risk losing Irving for nothing in free agency if they don't deal him by Thursday's deadline. Any team that acquires Irving risks losing him in free agency if they don't agree to a deal. But there's a host of teams out there that can clearly use a talented point guard's services, especially in a year where there doesn't appear to be a clear championship favorite.

As it stands now, Irving remains a Net, but that apparently won't be the case for long. The questions are his next destination and contract parameters at this juncture.
