Russell Westbrook Trade Rumors: Heat Not Interested in Kyle Lowry Swap with Lakers

Mike Chiari

The Miami Heat reportedly have not shown interest in a trade for Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Heat are against the idea of sending the Lakers veteran point guard Kyle Lowry for Westbrook.

Fischer noted that the Lakers are trying to upgrade their roster ahead of Thursday's trade deadline by dangling Westbrook and his expiring contract, adding that they have had conversations with the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Hornets.

L.A. acquired Westbrook from the Washington Wizards prior to the 2021-22 season, forming a Big Three with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but the move hasn't gone according to plan.

The 34-year-old Westbrook struggled in his first season with the Lakers, who missed the playoffs, prompting new head coach Darvin Ham to move Westbrook into a bench role.

While Westbrook has had his moments this season, he has scuffled through one of the worst statistical years of his career.

His 15.7 points per game mark his lowest output since his rookie season with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008-09, and his 6.3 rebounds per game are his fewest since 2013-14. His 7.6 assists per game are more than last season's average of 7.1 but shy of his career average of 8.4.

Westbrook is also shooting just 41.2 percent from the field, which is his worst performance since his rookie year, and 28.1 percent from beyond the arc, which is the fourth-worst mark of his career.

Because of those numbers, Westbrook doesn't have much trade value, though his $47.1 million expiring contract could be of interest to teams that want to offload bad contracts.

Lowry could be viewed in that light since he will make $28.3 million this season and $29.7 million next season before becoming a free agent.

The 36-year-old Lowry is a six-time All-Star and 2015-16 All-NBA third-team selection, plus he did something Westbrook never has in winning a championship, with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.

At his peak in Toronto, Lowry averaged about 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds per game, but he hasn't been close to those numbers this season.

Injuries have limited him to 44 games, and he is averaging 12.0 points, 5.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 three-pointers and 1.1 steals. Lowry's scoring is at its lowest since 2012-13, his assists are his fewest since 2009-10, and his rebounds haven't been lower since 2010-11.

He is also shooting just 39.6 percent from the floor, which is his worst performance since his rookie season in 2006-07, when he appeared in just 10 games for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Westbrook and Lowry are both veterans with big contracts who are underperforming, and it can be argued that neither would be a sizable upgrade over the other.

Also, the Lakers and Heat are trying to contend for the championship and likely want to add impact pieces by the deadline, so there may not be much point in such a swap.

Trading Westbrook could open up a great deal of flexibility for the Lakers, but Fischer noted that they have been reluctant to include their 2027 and 2029 first-round picks "in any deal," which may make it difficult to get something done in the next six days.
