Major League Baseball is investigating allegations of domestic violence and child abuse by Chicago White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger.

Olivia Finestead, who has a 10-month-old daughter with Clevinger, told The Athletic's Brittany Ghiroli and Katie Strang she has been in contact with MLB's department of investigations since last summer:

"According to Finestead, she has detailed to those investigators incidents of physical, verbal and emotional abuse, including an incident from last June in which Finestead said Clevinger choked her, and another about two weeks later when she said Clevinger slapped her in a hotel room when the team was playing the Dodgers and threw used chewing tobacco on their child."

Clevinger's agent, Seth Levinson, provided a statement to Ghiroli and Strang via text message: "We need to fairly and thoroughly protect our client and at the same time be respectful of the White Sox and MLB. We need time before responding."

Finestead alleges the violence and abuse occurred last summer when Clevinger was a member of the San Diego Padres. He signed a one-year deal worth $12 million with the White Sox as a free agent in December.

In a statement to Ghiroli and Strang, the White Sox said they became aware of the allegations after Clevinger was signed:

"Major League Baseball and the Chicago White Sox take any and all allegations very seriously, and the White Sox are completely supportive of the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy shared by MLB and the MLBPA. MLB opened an investigation after learning of these allegations. The White Sox were not aware of the allegations or the investigation at the time of his signing. The White Sox will refrain from comment until MLB's investigative process has reached its conclusion."

Per Ghiroli and Strang, the Padres stated they are "aware of MLB's investigation and completely support their efforts under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy. Due to the ongoing investigative process, we cannot comment any further at this time."

Finestead posted images of scratches and wounds on her Instagram story, and she wrote that Clevinger threw an iPad at her when she was pregnant and strangled her.

She also wrote that she wants MLB to put him "in required therapy" and maybe a "small" suspension to "take time out to really think about why he abuses his kids and their mothers."

Clevinger joined the Padres midway through the 2020 season in a trade from Cleveland. He made 23 appearances last season after missing all of 2021 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
