NFL Rumors: Giants OC Mike Kafka to Interview for Texans HC Job for 2nd Time

New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is getting another interview with the Houston Texans.

Per ESPN's Field Yates, the Texans will bring in Kafka for a second meeting about their vacant head coaching position.

The Texans announced Kafka completed his first interview on Sunday. They have cast a wide net to find their next head coach, with at least seven confirmed interviews thus far.

Other candidates who have met with Texans management include Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Ryans had a second interview lined up with the Texans this past Saturday that he had to cancel. The 38-year-old had to prepare for his team's game against the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round this past Sunday.

It's unclear how San Francisco's preparation for the NFC Championship Game might impact Ryans' ability to interview with teams this week.

Kafka did a terrific job with head coach Brian Daboll in elevating the Giants offense this season. The G-Men ranked 15th in points scored this season after finishing 31st in that category in 2021.

Fourth-year quarterback Daniel Jones had the best season of his career under Kafka, finishing the regular season with 3,205 passing yards, 708 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns. New York's offense put up 431 yards in a 31-24 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round.

Prior to joining Daboll's staff, Kafka spent five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs working with Andy Reid. The 35-year-old was the Chiefs' quarterbacks coach for each of his last four seasons with the team and worked as their passing game coordinator in 2020 and 2021.

The Texans are seeking their third head coach in the past three seasons. They fired David Culley after going 4-13 in 2021. Lovie Smith, whom they hired in March, got fired following a 3-13-1 record this season.
