NFL Rumors: Steelers' Brian Flores to Interview for Cardinals HC Job

The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly interviewing Pittsburgh Steelers defensive assistant Brian Flores for their head-coaching vacancy Monday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Flores will become the latest coach to interview for the opening created by Kliff Kingsbury's firing at the end of the regular season.

Flores, 41, posted a 24-25 record as the Miami Dolphins' coach from 2019 to 2021. His ouster was a shock given the team's strong on-field performance, but Dolphins owner Stephen Ross admitted Flores' exit was mostly a result of a personality conflict behind the scenes.

After interviewing and failing to land the New York Giants' head-coaching job, Flores sued the NFL for discriminatory hiring practices and claimed Ross once offered him a bonus of $100,000 per loss during the 2019 season. An NFL investigation found Ross made several comments indicating he cared more about the Dolphins' 2020 draft position than winning in 2019, but there was no actual incentive given to tank.

Flores' lawsuit is still ongoing.

The Cardinals fired Kingsbury after he posted a 4-13 season in 2022, a decision that came less than a year after signing him to a contract extension through 2027. Kingsbury went 28-37-1 over his four years in Arizona, largely disappointing aside from one playoff run in 2021.

Any coach that takes the Cardinals job will be facing a roster in turmoil. Kyler Murray will likely be out until midway through next season as he recovers from an ACL tear, and the team is also expected to explore trading wideout DeAndre Hopkins. There is a non-zero chance the 2023 season turns into a punt year for the organization, with the front office retooling the roster so it's in a better position to win in 2024 when Murray is fully healthy.

Flores previously interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings for their defensive coordinator vacancies.
