John Collins Trade Rumors: Jazz Have Made Inquiry Into Hawks Forward

Tim Daniels

The Utah Jazz have reportedly "shown interest" in a potential trade for Atlanta Hawks power forward John Collins in recent weeks.

Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic reported the latest update on the Collins rumors Friday:

Few, if any, NBA players have been the focus of more trade speculation over the past couple of seasons than Collins, who's spent his entire career with the Hawks since being selected in the first round of the 2017 draft.

Those rumors have persisted despite the 6'9'' forward being in just the second season of a five-year, $125 million contract with Atlanta.

The Phoenix Suns are another team that's contacted the Hawks about Collins, but there's no deal imminent and things may not heat up until closer to February's trade deadline, per Charania.

This season, the 25-year-old Wake Forest product has averaged 12.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the field in 15 games.

Meanwhile, the Jazz have been one of the league's biggest surprises with an 11-6 record that ranks second in the Western Conference.

Utah appeared on the track toward a full-scale rebuild following the offseason trades of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, so it seemed more likely they'd end up in the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes than the playoff race.

Instead, a well-balanced attack that includes six players averaging double figures in scoring—Lauri Markkanen, Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton, Malik Beasley, Kelly Olynyk and Mike Conley—has allowed the Jazz to thrive without their prior franchise cornerstones.

The long-awaited emergence of Markkanen as a major offensive threat has been a boon to the Jazz frontcourt, and trading for Collins would further boost the group, especially in terms of adding another rim protector.

Looking ahead, a lot will likely depend on whether Utah continues to thrive over the next few months to determine whether the Hawks star is still a target as the deadline moves closer.
