Ranking the 5 Wildest Stipulations Used in WWE Extreme Rules History

Anthony Mango

Extreme Rules was once a pay-per-view in which every match had some sort of gimmick or stipulation to spice it up before eventually devolving into one No Disqualification bout per card.

Since its inception in 2009, the vast majority of contests at the event have been rather mundane. Numerous generic Street Fights, Last Man Standing contests and steel cage matches that fans see on a regular basis have made up the bulk of the cards, but occasionally things can get a little stranger.

A Kiss Me Arse match, an Extreme Makeover, Loser Leaves WWE and an Asylum match are among the more uncommon stipulations, but a few others were straight-up strange.

Looking back on the 13 events, let's remember the five wildest gimmicks in Extreme Rules history.

5. WeeLC Match, 2014

Tables, Ladders & Chairs matches are a regular thing, to the point where there have been 12 pay-per-views dedicated to the gimmick. At Extreme Rules 2014, though, a new twist took place with the introduction of a WeeLC match.

Los Matadores and 3MB were two of the most comedic teams at the time. They were never taken seriously and lost constantly.

When El Torito and Hornswoggle were booked with this in mind, it could have come off as one awful, offensive joke that no one would enjoy. Instead, though, they put on a match that was almost better than everything else on the night.

Swoggle even told WrestleZone in December that it was the pinnacle of his career, as he had an opportunity to prove his doubters wrong. "I say in every interview I've ever done, I will never do anything better than WeeLC, ever, in my life," he said.

Even though it was on the kickoff, this contest stole the show. It's still talked about today for moments like Drew McIntyre's flip onto a table as one of the many spots that are better than you get in most TLC matches.

4. Country Whipping Tag Team Match, 2011

Your eyes don't deceive you. In the picture above, it is Michael Cole in a singlet and protective headgear, covered in bubble wrap, teaming with Jack Swagger against Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler.

This was a Country Whipping Match, which was essentially a strap match, although the performers involved made it wild.

Lawler and Swagger carried most of the contest, as expected, but to see Cole and Good Ol' JR in the ring like this was quite a sight.

This was far from the beloved spectacle WeeLC turned out to be, but it's proof how off-the-wall Extreme Rules can be when WWE wants to expand the horizons of stipulations occasionally.

3. Handicap Hog Pen Match for Miss WrestleMania Crown, 2009

Before the Women's Evolution, there were often ridiculous concepts such as the 25-Diva battle royal at WrestleMania 25 to determine a "Miss WrestleMania," which was won by Santino Marella in a wig.

The angle is not something that would go over well these days, but WWE went all-in on it, extending the feud for months before he lost the title to Vickie Guerrero.

It was all to be settled at Extreme Rules in a Handicap Hog Pen match that also featured Chavo Guerrero.

As expected by the name alone, this was gross in all the wrong ways. It didn't even amount to anything, as the newly anointed Miss WrestleMania, "Santina," was fired by the new owner of Raw, Donald Trump.

2. Wyatt Swamp Fight from The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, 2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE experimented with cinematic matches that would spice up its programming in the absence of live crowds.

One of those attempts to think outside the box came at The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, named as such mainly for its main event: a Wyatt Swamp Fight.

Bray Wyatt and then-universal champion Braun Strowman filmed a vignette brawl around a murky pond, rather than an actual match. It ended with a confusing no-contest finish, implying The Monster Among Men had fallen victim to the swamp waters.

The championship was an afterthought to all of this nonsense, which was quickly brushed aside as if it was nothing and business carried on as usual, making this even stranger.

Had this been a promo leading up to a normal fight, it might have been received better. On this show, it was just peculiar and confusing.

1. Eye for an Eye Match from The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, 2020

As unconventional as some of these matches were, nothing tops the Eye for an Eye match between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio in 2020.

For months, The Master of the 619's purpose seemed to be having his eye attacked, as though he were Lenny from The Simpsons.

To up the ante, this wasn't even a gimmick where the winner was the Superstar who poked his opponent in the eye. It went one step further. The match could only be won when an eyeball was extracted.

Needless to say, this was accomplished through some poor camera trickery that looked incredibly fake. The match sounded harsh to begin with and ended up finishing like a farcical B-movie special effect.

As with many other such WWE things, Mysterio was fine and this was never mentioned again. But for all of us watching at the time, this was grim.
