BS Meter on the Hottest WWE and AEW Rumors of the Last Month

Chris Roling

If it feels like the WWE and AEW rumor mill has entered unprecedented times as of late...that's because it has.

What was once a thing that only seemed to overheat near major events like WrestleMania has transformed into a year-round ordeal. And with the historical moment that was Vince McMahon stepping away from WWE and all of the line-blurring drama of AEW, things have only become more amplified than usual over the last month.

Before another potential escalation of the rumor mill due to a weekend featuring AEW's All Out and WWE's Clash at the Castle, it's a good time to step back and review some of the most outlandish, eyebrow-raising buzz that hit dirtsheets.

Here are a handful of the biggest rumors of the last month or so, put to the fire of the B.S. Meter (1 being a rumor that is almost certainly true, and 10 being a rumor that is largely B.S).

MJF is MIA

The buzz around MJF in AEW—and whether he might eventually join WWE or just go a no-wrestling route—has only increased in recent months.

MJF hit that unforgettable, reality-blending promo on AEW boss Tony Khan in early June as part of a budding storyline about his discontent with the company ahead of his contract possibly expiring.

Fast forward to early August, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported the following: "MJF has effectively vanished from the wrestling scene."

And this one makes plenty of sense—with a twist. Odds are MJF and AEW made a very real back-and-forth about a contract extension into a storyline. One can presume they baked that into an eventual feud with an AEW champ CM Punk. But Punk has been out with a foot injury and doesn't seem close to a return, throwing a wrench in the plans.

What was supposed to be a summer of Punk with MJF likely in a prominent spot has been put on hold. It wouldn't make sense for the company to roll out MJF in other normal feuds in the meantime, nor would it make sense for him to come around and risk some kayfabe-breaking pictures or otherwise getting snapped.

Karrion Kross in the main event?

Once Triple H took over in place of McMahon as head of WWE creative, it seemed like a matter of time before he brought back some of his guys.

That almost happened right away with the return of Karrion Kross, who showed up and inserted himself into a promo with unified champion Roman Reigns.

Despite speculation that Kross would then join Reigns and Drew McIntyre in the main event of Clash at the Castle, Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported right after that there were no such plans.

There's still time for this to be proven false, but it rings rather true, too. Throwing out Kross as a shocker of a return right into the main-event scene with Reigns is a signal to fans that there are indeed big plans for him in the future.

But Clash of the Castle in McIntyre territory overseas seems like a special moment WWE won't want to muddy by adding a third, barring a sudden desire to de-unify the titles. There's plenty of time to get Kross on the ground and running against the likes of Reigns without making fans feel like Triple H wants to shove him down their throats.

Sasha Banks and Naomi Return Soon?

Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out on WWE in May and haven't been seen since, yet as expected, remain a large part of the rumor mill.

According to Meltzer on Saturday Night's Main Event, the two had reached an "in principle" deal to return to WWE in early August.

This one feels like a toss-up, though. One would think if there was an agreement in place to get two of the best women's wrestlers on the planet back on regular programming that they would have already returned. This is especially the case with certain programs struggling with depth along the women's roster right now.

Still, there's also a chance both Banks and Naomi are much more open to returning to WWE at all after the change in creative leadership. That could mean simply waiting until the best possible moment.

Problem is, where is that moment? Clash at the Castle? Waiting for another major event down the line? It feels like since the two haven't surfaced elsewhere that they will eventually return to WWE, but the how and why is almost impossible to figure out.

Triple H Not Done With Additions

It seemed obvious Triple H was going to make some major roster shuffles as soon as he got control.

That was apparent right away with Kross, plus appearances of names like Dakota Kai and eventually Johnny Gargano, plus pushes for names like Ciampa.

But Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, right in the middle of those returns earlier this month, reported that the additions wouldn't stop anytime soon.

Why would they, right? There are still names like Bray Wyatt floating out there in free agency who might come back if the new leadership means more freedom in the creativity department. Given the tonal changes in some promos, it's clear that's indeed happening already.

And why stop with the hypotheticals there? Triple H in charge might be enough to lure away some talent from AEW in time, chief among them MJF.

So why stop anytime soon, right?

WWE Draft Debate

On paper, another edition of the WWE draft might make a lot of sense for the company so that it can re-balance men and women's divisions to account for injuries and plain depth issues.

Back in mid-August, Fightful reported (h/t Randall Ortman, Cageside Seats) that WWE talent expected a draft to happen right after Clash at the Castle.

But at this point, that just straight-up seems unlikely. WWE would have promoted the tar out of an upcoming draft by now already were it about to happen so soon.

And frankly, fun as a WWE draft might be for fans, the product itself already has a fresh feel after the big change to creative. New stars continue to emerge as contenders or even champions (Liv Morgan) and it feels like there is plenty more change on the way, even in terms of outside roster additions or call-ups.

A draft right now might feel redundant, so letting this current product marinate a bit and then holding a draft in 2023 might make the most sense.
