Bring Back Sad Corbin to WWE Smackdown, AEW's Title Overload, More Friday Takes

With both WWE Clash at the Castle and All Elite Wrestling All Out coming up next weekend, the top two wrestling promotions have quite a lot on their plates at the moment.

SmackDown featured another match from Happy Corbin and Ricochet, Sami Zayn continued to be the best member of The Bloodline alongside The Usos and Roman Reigns, and WWE continued to use the background to tell additional stories with Doudrop and Nikki A.S.H.

Over on Rampage, three titles were on the line from three different promotions, with two other champions making appearances on the show, too.

With so much gold cycling in and out of AEW, it's beginning to feel like the company has lost a bit of focus on its own belts along the way.

WWE Needs to Bring Back Sad Corbin

Happy Corbin lost to Ricochet in the opening match on this week's SmackDown, but it was how the announcers addressed his loss that was interesting.

Pat McAfee and Michael Cole spoke about the former United States champion being on somewhat of a downward spiral recently, and that is immediately going to remind fans of Corbin's best work.

When he was sad, broke, dirty, unshaven and begging for any opportunity WWE could give him, Corbin was doing some of the best character work in all of WWE.

It looks like WWE might be taking him down that path again, and if it does, this time it should end with him turning babyface for the first time in his WWE career.

Subtle Storytelling Is a Breath of Fresh Air

For the past few weeks, WWE has been using the background to tell stories that the announcers and Superstars in front of the camera are barely even acknowledging, and it has allowed fans to run wild with their own theories.

When all of this started, it was during an episode of Raw, when we saw a car wreck in the background of a quick backstage segment. Throughout the night, more minor events were shown until we got the return of Dexter Lumis near the end of the episode.

Another example of this took place on Friday when Doudrop and Nikki A.S.H were shown arguing in the background of an interview with Natalya and Sonya Deville. No mention was made of this argument, but fans on social media noticed right away.

This kind of thing is not what WWE is known for. Subtlety and pro wrestling are things you rarely hear in the same sentence, but that is what WWE has started doing. Not only has it been a breath of fresh air to see stories develop this way, but it gives management a lot of room to experiment with things.

For all we know, Doudrop and Nikki will never address their argument, but the odds are good that this is leading to a breakup. We'll have to wait to see what happens.

Sami Zayn Should Be a World Champion

For the past few years, Zayn has been one of the best performers in all of WWE. Not only can he get a great match out of anybody, but he has consistently been one of the most entertaining characters in pro wrestling.

He has been positioned in The Bloodline as the sacrificial lamb who doesn't realize his leader keeps sending him to the slaughterhouse. It's building sympathy with the crowd, and that is why WWE needs to turn him babyface before it's too late.

As the heroic underdog, Zayn would be a great choice to defeat Reigns for the undisputed title. It would give him a monster push and reward him for all of his hard work during and after the pandemic.

The crowd loves Zayn, and if he were to go from cowardly cohort to heroic giant-slayer, his popularity would increase even further.

AEW Officially Has Too Many Titles Floating Around

When AEW first started up in 2019, it had three belts. There was the men's world title, the women's world title and the tag team championships.

Since then, AEW has added the TBS, TNT, All-Atlantic and Trios titles, giving the company a total of seven championships. And that's not even counting the FTW title.

All of that would be hard enough for any promoter to juggle, but AEW has also featured championships from NWA, AAA, Impact, Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro-Wrestling on its programming. This week's Rampage alone featured belts from ROH, AEW and AAA being defended all on one show.

For many fans, the number of belts floating around is simply too high. Occasionally showcasing talents and titles from other promotions is one thing, but allowing them to become a regular part of your programming is going to devalue AEW's titles to some people.

At some point, Tony Khan needs to pick and choose which championships he wants to use and then focus on making every one of those as prestigious as possible. Until that happens, AEW is going to feel like a revolving door of titles.
