Chiefs' Win-Loss Predictions for 2022 NFL Season

Jake Rill

Over the past decade, few NFL franchises have been as successful as the Kansas City Chiefs. They've made the playoffs in seven of the past eight seasons, winning six AFC West titles, two AFC championships and a Super Bowl during that stretch.

Now, the Chiefs are looking to keep it going in 2022. They have one preseason game to go (Thursday at home vs. the Green Bay Packers) before they open the regular season with a Sept. 11 road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Not only has Kansas City won the AFC West six years in a row, but it has also recorded 12 or more victories five times during that stretch. It's been quite an impressive run for the Chiefs, which are well-positioned to be strong again this season.

How will Kansas City fare this year? Here's a look at its full schedule, analysis regarding the team's outlook and predictions for the upcoming NFL campaign.

Analysis and Expectations

The Chiefs have dominated the AFC West during their run of six consecutive division titles. They're also the betting favorite to win the crown again this year. But the other three teams all have a chance to keep things close throughout the season.

The Las Vegas Raiders went 10-7 last year and made the playoffs, and they then traded for star wide receiver Davante Adams this past offseason. The Los Angeles Chargers have a top quarterback (Justin Herbert) and added pass-rusher Khalil Mack earlier this year. And the Denver Broncos now have Russell Wilson as their QB.

Since the beginning of the 2015 season, the Chiefs are 36-6 in games against their AFC West rivals. But it's possible Kansas City won't be quite as dominant in 2022.

The competition in the division has improved, while the Chiefs have lost several impact players, including wide receiver Tyreek Hill and safety Tyrann Mathieu. Hill was the most notable departure, and if Kansas City can't get close to replacing his production in the receiving corps, its offense may not be nearly as potent.

Still, it should be another solid season at least for the Chiefs. As long as they have quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and other key core players, they're set up for success. That's why DraftKings Sportsbook has the over/under for the team's win total at 10.5.

There's the potential for Kansas City to make it back to the AFC Championship Game for the fifth straight season and possibly go even further. At the least, though, the Chiefs seem poised to be a playoff team, even if they don't end up as a top championship contender.

Predictions

There's a strong possibility the Chiefs lose more games during the 2022 season than they did during any of the previous four. But that's because they haven't lost more than five games in any year during that stretch.

There are some challenging games on Kansas City's schedule, even outside of division play. It will take on playoff-caliber teams such as the Arizona Cardinals (Week 1), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Week 4), Buffalo Bills (Week 6), Los Angeles Rams (Week 12) and Cincinnati Bengals (Week 13).

It's not going to be a bad season by any means, especially if receivers such as JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and/or rookie Skyy Moore step up as strong targets for Mahomes. The Chiefs' offense will still be at least solid, and their defense also has the potential to be a strong unit.

Because the AFC West is going to be so competitive, it may only take 10 or 11 wins to capture the division crown. So Kansas City won't necessarily need another 12-win season to end up in first place.

That's good for the Chiefs, as they're unlikely to get there. The prediction here is Kansas City will lose seven games (its most since going 9-7 in 2014), but that won't prevent it from reaching the postseason.

The Chiefs will likely still win the AFC West, and if not, they'll end up as a wild card. And from there, anything can happen once the playoffs get underway.

Prediction: Chiefs will finish 10-7
