With the 2022 MLB draft officially in the books, it's time for an updated look at how all 30 MLB farm systems stack up.

The following factors helped determine the placement of players and teams:

• Potential (Player): Potential trumps production a lot of the time, especially in the lower levels of the minors and with recent draft picks. Skill sets and tools are often better indicators of what kind of player someone will be.
• Talent (Player): As for those in the higher levels of the minors who are close to breaking through to the big leagues, production and talent were the determining factors, as these players are viewed as more complete products.
• Overall Depth (Team): Having one or two elite prospects is great, but a deep farm system is the way to build a sustainable contender. Depth and talent were the biggest factors in ranking each team.
• High-End Talent (Team): There is a difference between a prospect who has a chance of making an impact in the majors and a prospect who could be a star. Elite prospects served as a tiebreaker when teams were close in the rankings.

A tier system was used to help differentiate the varying levels of individual talent:

• Tier 1: Prospects who have elite skill sets and All-Star potential. This is the cream of the prospect crop. These players will make up B/R's updated Top 100 prospect list when it publishes next week.
  
• Tier 2: Prospects who have a good chance of becoming impact contributors. These are the players who were in consideration for spots on B/R's Top 100 prospect list and could end up there in the future.
• Tier 3: Prospects who profile as fringe MLB contributors or young players who are still too raw to project any higher. This tier represents the bulk of prospects around baseball, though more than a few could climb to the next tier.

Teams were initially ranked based on the number of Tier 1 and Tier 2 prospects in their systems, and then the rankings were tweaked from there. Bold names indicate a player was a 2022 draft pick.

Note: A player must not have passed the rookie-eligibility limits (130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, 45 days on an active roster prior to Sept. 1) to be included in these rankings.

30. Los Angeles Angels

Shortstop Zach Neto hit .403/.500/.751 with 40 doubles, 27 home runs and 108 RBI in 100 games during his three seasons at Campbell University. The No. 13 overall pick in this year's draft could quickly make the jump to Tier 1 with a strong start to his pro career.

29. Chicago White Sox

Shortstop Colson Montgomery has quickly moved to the top of the White Sox farm system. The No. 22 overall pick in last year's draft is hitting .323/.428/.494 with 23 extra-base hits in 63 games between Single-A and High-A.

The White Sox plucked big 6'9" prep left-hander Noah Schultz from their own backyard, as he played his high school ball about 40 miles from Guaranteed Rate Field. He's a good athlete for his size and already has a plus slider to go along with a projectable frame.

The Braves were aggressive in targeting high-ceiling high school arms, taking Owen Murphy (No. 20 overall), JR Ritchie (No. 35 overall) and Cole Phillips (No. 57 overall) to restock a farm system that has churned out pitching talent in recent years.

Outfielders Drew Gilbert (No. 28 overall) and Jacob Melton (No. 64 overall) were two of the breakout performers of the 2022 college baseball season. They could move quickly through the minors if they continue on their current trajectory.

The Nationals landed perhaps the highest-ceiling prospect in the entire 2022 draft in Elijah Green at No. 5 overall. He has a rare mix of elite power and elite speed, though he'll need to cut down on his swing-and-miss to fully realize his potential.

The Blue Jays were linked to switch-hitting third baseman Tucker Toman throughout the predraft process, and they wound up getting him in the third round after taking well-rounded prep lefty Brandon Barriera with their first pick.

The 19-year-old has grown four inches and gained 45 points since signing for $200,000 in 2019, and he is now a towering 6'8", 220-pounder with electric stuff. Already pitching at Double-A, he has a 3.05 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 62 innings.

The Marlins grabbed one of the most MLB-ready bats in the 2022 class in Jacob Berry with the No. 6 overall pick. They then went in the opposite direction with high-ceiling prep pitcher Jacob Miller in the second round. Don't be surprised if Berry is in the majors by 2024.

With an advanced hit tool and all of the defensive tools necessary to stick at shortstop, Cole Young has a chance to be a bargain in his own right as the No. 21 overall pick in this year's draft. There's no such thing as too much quality middle infield talent.

The Rockies have a new top pitching prospect after taking Gonzaga ace Gabriel Hughes with the No. 10 overall pick. They also reeled in two of the top college bats in the class in line-drive hitter Sterlin Thompson and slugger Jordan Beck, thanks to three picks inside the top 40.

He is also one of the best defensive outfielders in the minors.

After a big reach for College World Series breakout star Cade Horton at No. 7 overall, the Cubs grabbed one of the best high school pitchers in the country in Jackson Ferris in the second round. A below-slot deal with Horton should give them plenty of wiggle room to sign Ferris.

Cam Collier was originally one of the top prospects in the 2023 draft before reclassifying, getting his GED and enrolling at JUCO powerhouse Chipola College, where he more than held his own as a 17-year-old. He'll take time to develop, but he could be special.

With a strong 6'7", 240-pound frame, James Wood has always had huge power potential, but an inconsistent senior season at IMG Academy caused him to slip to the second round in the 2021 draft. The 19-year-old is hitting .307/.431/.523 in 216 plate appearances this season with a manageable 19.0 percent strikeout rate and 16.7 percent walk rate.

Right-hander Dylan Lesko was a candidate to go No. 1 overall before undergoing Tommy John surgery in April, while Robby Snelling is a 4-star football recruit who has a better feel for pitching than most two-sport stars and could take off with his full focus on baseball. The Padres got a great draft haul.

The 21-year-old is a terrific all-around athlete, and he is finally on track after dealing with some nagging injuries.

After taking dynamic two-way player Reggie Crawford with the final pick in the first round, the Giants scooped up left-hander Carson Whisenhunt in the second round. He slipped following a season-long PED suspension which he attributed to supplements purchased from a nationwide chain. They both have Tier 1 potential.

The Guardians rolled the dice on the power potential of Chase DeLauter with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2022 draft. The 6'4", 235-pound outfielder hit .437/.576/.828 with eight doubles and eight home runs in 24 games this spring at James Madison before a broken foot ended his junior season.

The Rays made the biggest reach of the first round when they took prep first baseman Xavier Isaac with the No. 29 overall pick. The savings they should gain from a below-slot deal there will help them sign a solid crop of college talent taken behind him, led by Stanford outfielder Brock Jones, who hit .324/.451/.664 with 21 home runs and 16 steals this spring.

With an athletic 6'7" frame, it's easy to think there might be some untapped power potential in first-round pick Spencer Jones. The Vanderbilt star hit .370/.460/.644 with 12 home runs and 60 RBI this spring, although he also struck out 64 times in 61 games.

Oneil Cruz was recalled from the minors on June 20 and has taken over as the Pirates' everyday shortstop. There is no denying his elite raw tools, but he still has a ways to go refining his game, as evidenced by his .204 average, 77 OPS+ and 36.5 percent strikeout rate in his first 26 games.

With the No. 4 pick in the 2022 draft, the Pirates landed a player in Termarr Johnson who could wind up having a legitimate 80-grade hit tool. Questions about his future defensive home aside, he has a chance to be an elite talent and a cornerstone of the club's long-term plans.

The Rangers had perhaps the best draft strategy of any team in 2022, reaching for Kumar Rocker at No. 3 overall and signing him to a below-slot deal that saved more than $2 million against slot value. They figure to redirect those savings to Brock Porter, who was widely regarded as the best high school pitcher in the draft before he fell to the fourth round.

Gavin Stone has been the breakout prospect in a deep Dodgers farm system. A fifth-round pick out of Central Arkansas during the shortened 2020 draft, he has baffled opposing hitters to the tune of a 1.50 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 106 strikeouts in 78 innings between High-A and Double-A this year.

The Dodgers had just one pick inside the top 100 in this year's draft as a result of exceeding the luxury-tax threshold by the maximum amount, and they selected Louisville catcher Dalton Rushing with the No. 40 overall pick. Despite an abbreviated 2022 class, this is still an elite farm system.

He doesn't have the highest ceiling, but left-hander Cooper Hjerpe might be the first starting pitcher from the 2022 draft class to reach the majors. With a funky arm slot and a great feel for his three-pitch repertoire, he racked up an NCAA-leading 161 strikeouts in 103.1 innings this spring at Oregon State.

Even after Adley Rutschman graduated to the majors, the Orioles still have an elite farm system, thanks in part to the rise of Gunnar Henderson as one of baseball's top prospects. The 21-year-old is hitting .294/.428/.540 with 13 home runs, 15 steals and an 18.1 percent walk rate in 79 games in the upper levels of the minors.

While outfielder Druw Jones was the consensus top prospect in the 2022 draft, shortstop Jackson Holliday was not far behind and was by no means a reach as the No. 1 overall pick. The son of former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday, he hit an absurd .685/.749/1.392 this spring with 89 hits in 41 games to break J.T. Realmuto's national high school record for hits in a season.
