The New York Jets missed out on Tyreek Hill, but that doesn't mean they won't try to upgrade the wide receiver position this offseason.
According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, the Jets "are keeping an eye on the situations" of the Seattle Seahawks' DK Metcalf, the Tennessee Titans' A.J. Brown and the San Francisco 49ers' Deebo Samuel.
Cimini added that "at this point, there's no indication that any of them are available."
It's hard to imagine the Titans getting rid of Brown or the Niners moving on from Samuel anytime soon, even if the price tag for elite wideouts went up this offseason after the major extensions signed by Davante Adams (five years, $141.3 million) or Hill (three years, $75 million) after each were traded.
While both Brown and Samuel are entering the final years of their rookie contracts and will cost their respective teams major money to keep, the Titans and Niners remain contenders with rosters built to win now. Brown is 24; Samuel is 26. Contending teams generally don't get rid of young star receivers heading into their second contract.
Metcalf is arguably a different story. The Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos and released linebacker Bobby Wagner. It's clear Seattle is entering a rebuilding phase. Of any of the three teams that might be willing to trade a fourth-year wideout about to get a major payday, it would be the Seahawks.
Metcalf is just 24, however, and would make any young quarterback's life easier. For that reason, the retooling Seahawks probably aren't going to be enticed to deal Metcalf.
Regardless, the Jets need help at wide receiver for second-year quarterback Zach Wilson. Elijah Moore showed promise in his rookie season, Corey Davis was solid when healthy (34 catches for 492 yards and four touchdowns in nine games) and Braxton Berrios showed promise in just his third year.
But the Jets don't have a true No. 1 option for the developing Wilson. They could address the position at the draft, where they hold the Nos. 4 and 10 overall picks in the first round.
That should allow them to nab one of the top wideouts on their draft board, with options ranging from the Ohio State duo of Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave to USC's Drake London, Alabama's Jameson Williams, Arkansas' Treylon Burks or Penn State's Jahan Dotson.
One way or another, expect the Jets to address this need at some point this offseason. Getting Wilson explosive weapons will be key for his development.
