NFL Rumors: Jarvis Landry Seeking New Contract Worth Around $20M Annually

Mike Chiari

Free-agent wide receiver Jarvis Landry is reportedly in search of a massive contract on the open market.

According to ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio on Saturday, Landry has switched agents from Klutch Sports' Damarius Bilbo to Roosevelt Barnes and Jovan Barnes amid his search for a deal that will pay him around $20 million annually.

The 29-year-old Landry was released by the Cleveland Browns this month after spending the past four seasons with the organization.

After beginning his career with the Miami Dolphins and earning three Pro Bowl nods in four seasons, Landry was traded to the Browns prior to the 2018 season. He was named a Pro Bowler in each of his first two seasons in Cleveland, but his production dipped over the past two seasons.

In 2020, Landry finished with 72 receptions for 840 yards and three touchdowns, which at the time marked his lowest statistical output since his rookie season.

Things got worse for Landry last season for a multitude of reasons, including a knee sprain that cost him five games and limited him in others.

The Browns also didn't get great quarterback play, as Baker Mayfield was nagged by an injury to his non-throwing shoulder for most of the campaign.

As a result, Landry recorded just 52 catches for 570 yards and two scores, all of which were career lows.

Still, Landry is capable of being a high-volume receiver and chain mover when healthy, as evidenced by his three career 1,000-yard seasons and two 100-catch seasons.

All told, Landry has caught 688 passes for 7,598 yards and 37 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons.

Despite his overall success, Landry could struggle to get anything close to $20 million per season in free agency. That is based on the fact that no free-agent wideout has reached that level this offseason.

According to Spotrac, Christian Kirk got the biggest contract among free-agent receivers at $18 million per season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is followed by Allen Robinson II at $15.5 million per year and both Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Russell Gage at $10 million per year.

Recently, Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams got traded and signed new deals, making them the two highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.

After getting dealt from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Miami Dolphins, Hill signed a contract that will pay him $30 million annually, while Adams will now be paid $28 million per year after getting traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Las Vegas Raiders.

At $20 million per season, Landry would be tied with Chris Godwin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike Williams of the Los Angeles Chargers and Amari Cooper of the Browns as the sixth-highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, per Spotrac.

Given his injury issues last season and the fact that he has never been a truly elite receiver, it is difficult to envision Landry approaching that level of compensation.
