Report: Anthony Davis at Center and Lakers' Expected Lineup with LeBron, Westbrook

Tyler Conway

Despite the signings of Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan, it looks like we're getting a healthy dose of Anthony Davis, NBA starting center, this season.

Bill Oram, Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic reported the Lakers are heading into camp with the expectation that Davis will start at center, with Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Wayne Ellington and Trevor Ariza filling out the remaining starting spots. Talen Horton-Tucker is also expected to be given a chance to win a starting job as well.

The signings of Howard and Jordan were seemingly designed to put a damper on all hopes that Davis would play the full-time center role, but that doesn't appear to be the case. It's likely that Howard and Jordan will now back up Davis and then fill in alongside the All-Star big man in situational lineups—likely when Westbrook and/or James are off the floor.

A lineup featuring Westbrook, James, Davis and a traditional center seemed like a spacing nightmare on paper. Westbrook is one of the worst high-volume three-point shooters in NBA history, Davis regressed from deep last season after being a sniper in the bubble and James has always been a streaky shooter from distance.

Even this proposed starting lineup isn't going to be raining threes like the 2017 Golden State Warriors. Ellington has the highest career three-point percentage among the proposed five at 38.2 percent, which is good but not otherworldly. Ariza is a 36-year-old who looked his age a lot of the time last season with the Miami Heat.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope shot 41.0 percent from three last season and was jettisoned as part of the package to land Westbrook. If spacing is an issue, it won't be long before Lakers fans are wondering if the team was better off acquiring Buddy Hield rather than making the splashier Westbrook move.
