Derek Stingley Jr. Out for LSU vs. Mississippi State With Foot Injury

LSU star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is not expected to play Saturday against Mississippi State because of a foot injury.

According to Bruce Feldman and Brody Miller of The Athletic, Stingley suffered the injury during practice on Wednesday.

The report noted that Stingley did not travel with the team to Starkville, Mississippi, for Saturday's game, and the expectation is he could miss "an extended period of time" with the ailment.

Per Shea Dixon of 247Sports, Stingley's injury is to the same foot that nagged him during fall camp and resulted in him wearing a non-contact jersey leading up to the season opener.

Stingley, a 20-year-old junior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is widely regarded as one of the potential top picks in the 2021 NFL draft should he forgo his senior season.

The talented defensive back announced his arrival in a big way as a freshman in 2019, recording 38 tackles, six interceptions and 15 passes defended for a Tigers team that went undefeated and won the national championship.

Injuries limited him to seven games last season, and his production suffered, as he finished with just 27 tackles, no picks and five pass breakups.

In three games so far this season for the 2-1 Tigers, Stingley has eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble to his credit, but no interceptions or passes defended.

Being without a player of Stingley's caliber in the secondary could significantly damage LSU's chances of beating a 2-1 Mississippi State team on the road in a tough environment.

That is especially true given the success of Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers so far this season. The sophomore is completing 74.8 percent of his passes for 1,083 yards with eight touchdowns and just one interception.

Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach loves to employ a pass-heavy attack, meaning the LSU secondary figures to be under siege all day Saturday.

Until Stingley is able to return to the lineup, Eli Ricks figures to occupy the No. 1 cornerback role with sophomore Dwight McGlothern starting across from him.
