5-Star Safety Prospect Jacoby Mathews Decommits from LSU

Rob Goldberg

Top 2022 prospect Jacoby Mathews announced on social media he has decommitted from LSU:

Mathews is considered a 5-star recruit and the No. 2 safety in the class, according to 247Sports composite rankings. He is rated the 27th best player overall in 2022.

He initially committed to LSU in April over a final six that also included Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Texas and USC.

Mathews took an official visit to Texas A&M in June after his commitment, informing LSU coaches of his visit at the time, per Billy Embody of 247Sports.

Brody Miller of The Athletic noted Mathews has been a "major recruiter" for LSU since his commitment, but it now appears he will reconsider his options.

The Louisiana native will likely be a difference-maker regardless of where he goes thanks to his impressive athleticism. Mathews played both safety and quarterback for Ponchatoula High School and even competed for the basketball team.

At 6'2", 205 pounds, he has excellent size for his position with the ability to make plays all over the field defensively.

He earned more than two different scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country with Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma among the notable options outside of his earlier finalists.
