Report: Arnold Palmer's 1958 Masters Green Jacket Among Items Stolen from Augusta

The green jacket Arnold Palmer won at the 1958 Masters Tournament was among the items allegedly stolen from Augusta National Golf Club between 2009 and 2022, according to cllct's Darren Rovell.

August National never reported the jacket missing, Rovell reported.

The jacket was claimed by the FBI with a seizure warrant in 2022 following its attempted sale for $3.6 million, according to Rovell.

The seizure happened after an Augusta National member attempted to buy the item "to return the jacket to Augusta," Rovell wrote.

A man was charged in federal court in Illinois on Wednesday regarding the transportation of "millions of dollars' worth" of Masters-related items from the Georgia golf club, according to the Associated Press.

Palmer, a four-time Masters champion, won his first green jacket at 28 years old. He died in 2016 at age 87.

Augusta National draped a green jacket over an empty chair at the Masters in 2017 in Palmer's honor.

That jacket was one of Palmer's "many" ceremonial jackets and not his authentic winner's jacket, Rovell reported.

The lawsuit filed in Illinois accuses Richard Globensky of knowingly transporting stolen goods across state lines to Tampa, Florida. The suit involves items taken from Augusta National "and other locations," the Associated Press reported.

In addition to Palmer's Masters jacket, the stolen goods "included a huge amount of stolen tournament merchandise," Rovell reported.

Globensky was a former August National employee, according to Jason Meisner of the Chicago Tribune.

If Globensky is convicted, he will have to forfeit the goods, or any money earned from selling the goods, to the federal government, the AP reported.

Augusta National has been involved in legal battles regarding allegedly stolen green jackets in the past.

The golf club sued a Dallas auction house in 2013 regarding the sale of a jacket awarded to 1959 Masters champion Art Wall and then levied a similar lawsuit against a Florida-based auction house for the sale of a Byron Nelson green jacket.

Augusta National noted in these lawsuits green jackets are owned by the club, not the winner, and are not meant to leave the club's property. Both suits were eventually settled.

During the 2013 lawsuit against the Texas auction house, August National stated the club had found "three employees were responsible for not only the theft of the jacket, but also for the theft of three other jackets and a number of other items that collectors might value in and around the grounds of Augusta National."

One of those other jackets may have been Palmer's, which could also be the most valuable of the collection.

Globensky is expected to plead guilty during his arraignment on May 15, according to Meisner.
