Rhea Ripley Injury Fallout, Sami Zayn the New Top Babyface and More WWE Raw Takes

Kevin Berge

The April 15 edition of WWE Raw delivered for a packed crowd in the Centre Bell in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sami Zayn and Chad Gable earned their main event hype with a non-stop battle for the Intercontinental Championship. The champion retained in front of his hometown crowd, but the challenger had the last laugh in a brutal attack after the bell.

Rhea Ripley announced that she needed to vacate the Women's World Championship due to injury. Liv Morgan mocked her on her way out while The Judgment Day, especially Damian Priest, embraced their fallen leader.

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano picked up an important victory over The New Day and The Creed Brothers to earn a title shot at Awesome Truth and the newly rebranded World Tag Team Championships.

This show delivered some disappointing news but also memorable moments that will continue to reshape WWE after WrestleMania 40.

Liv Morgan is Best Option to Win Vacant Women's World Championship

Best wishes to Rhea Ripley on a smooth recovery following her injury. Hopefully, she will not be out of action for too long.

In the meantime, a new champion needs to be crowned, and who would be better for that opportunity than Liv Morgan?

Morgan was set up as the next challenger to Mami before her injury, and WWE has laid the foundation for a natural continuation of that feud when the Australian returns.

WWE can fuel that angle by elevating the former SmackDown women's champion and giving her a second chance with a title run.

Her first run was cut short by poor booking in her rivalry with Ronda Rousey, and she has never truly had a chance to show whether she can be a top name in WWE.

While WWE has not announced how the next titleholder will be crowned, Morgan should win whatever opportunity is needed. She can move on to work with top names including Becky Lynch, Naomi, Iyo Sky, Nia Jax and more.

By the time Ripley returns, Morgan can establish herself as a top heel before facing her motivated rival.

Damian Priest Must Step Up in Rhea Ripley's Absence

While the women's division can pivot in Ripley's absence, The Judgment Day will have a harder time standing without Mami on top.

Damian Priest must establish himself as the sole leader of the crew no matter what it takes. He holds the World Heavyweight Championship but still doesn't feel like a true top star.

Raw delivered a great video package highlighting his journey to stardom, but it was more useful in gaining The Punishment sympathy over credibility.

He must show dominance over his stablemates, especially Finn Bálor, who won't appreciate it. If The Archer of Infamy can bring the group back to the top of Raw, everyone will fall into line.

If Priest does not get a firm hold and pick up decisive wins in the ring, though, there may not be a Judgment Day left when Ripley returns.

DIY Will Dethrone Awesome Truth Quickly

It was a nice moment to see The Miz and R-Truth win at WrestleMania, but the novelty of Awesome Truth with the tag team titles is already wearing thin.

On Monday's Raw, Triple H unveiled the new World Tag Team Championships for the pair, but they do not feel like the right team to hold the more impressive gold titles.

On the same night, though, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa earned a title shot against Awesome Truth next week.

DIY needs a big victory and chance to show that this team can be as great on the main roster as in NXT.

Ciampa and Gargano can reestablish the titles as the workhorse championships, with some great in-ring battles against The Creed Brothers, The New Day, The Judgment Day and others.

This is a far more exciting reality than Awesome Truth playing the veteran comedy act with the gold for months to come.

Sami Zayn Ready to Be Face of Raw

Cody Rhodes delivered an unofficial farewell to Raw, slowly moving away from his role as brand leader.

Ahead of the WWE draft, it seems likely The American Nightmare will focus on SmackDown going forward with AJ Styles or LA Knight next stepping up to him.

This leaves a top babyface spot on the red brand. While Rhodes focused on Jey Uso and his upcoming challenge to Damian Priest, another man more clearly reached for the mantle.

Sami Zayn immediately claimed the top babyface role with the best entrance of 2024, heading directly from the door of the arena through the crowd to the ring.

He followed up with a fantastic match with Chad Gable, with the two competitors establishing it as a battle that needs to happen again on another major stage.

While Damian Priest may hold the top title on the red brand, he is being overshadowed by the intercontinental champion.

Zayn is carrying the legacy of the IC title forward after the honor Gunther bestowed upon it. More importantly, the new champion is carrying on his own legacy, which was built from his work with The Bloodline in 2022.

Crowds love him, and he elevates every angle he works. Zayn should be considered the face of Raw as long as he and Rhodes work on opposite brands.

WWE Must Lean into Heel Chad Gable as Next Kurt Angle

Chad Gable has been compared to Kurt Angle since his debut, but he has never felt more ready to take up the mantle left by The Olympic Gold Medalist.

Angle was one of the top stars of the Ruthless Aggression era because he was equally a great performer and entertainer. He was arguably the best in-ring performer of his time and could make any story work.

While Gable may not claim the title of "best in the world," the Alpha Academy leader can rise to the occasion and bring an important combination of technical flair and comedy chops to an upper-midcard push.

He can be dangerous and funny, much like Angle. That has been clear for a couple years. He just needed to get that push up the card to show how far he can take his talent.

WWE cannot afford to take him off television again for a while. If Sami Zayn is the top face on Raw, Gable needs to prove he can be one of the top heels to challenge him for months to come.

If all works out, both Zayn and Gable will leave this rivalry bigger stars than they have ever been before.
