Erik Beaston

WWE heads to France on May 4 for Backlash, the annual followup to WrestleMania.

This year, the show will be of the utmost importance as the red-hot company attempts to build on the excitement for the product.

What matches have been announced and what should be expected?

Furthermore, what should fans expect to see go in the second international premium live event of the year?

Find out with this preview of the traditional follow-up to WrestleMania.

Match Card

Announced for the May 4 show are:

Successful First Defenses for Cody Rhodes, Damian Priest

Cody Rhodes and Damian Priest experienced career-defining moments at WrestleMania 40.

The American Nightmare finished his story and ended Roman Reigns' 1,316-day run as undisputed WWE universal champion.

The Archer of Infamy attacked Drew McIntyre, cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase, and became world heavyweight champion after nearly a year of biding his time.

Both men helped define The Showcase of the Immortals and are in the infancy of their title reigns. Neither is in any real danger of losing the gold, either.

Priest is tentatively slated to defend against Jey Uso, who won a Fatal 4-Way Match to earn a shot at the world title, while Rhodes will battle either LA Knight or AJ Styles, depending on the outcome of Friday's SmackDown main event.

Both will win their respective matches and continue championship reigns that earned tremendous buzz coming out of WrestleMania and will be key to the sustained momentum of WWE through the spring months.

Mami's Toughest Test Comes from Former Tag Team Partner

Rhea Ripley successfully defended the Women's World Championship against Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 40.

Despite The Man's status as one of the greatest to lace a pair of boots, it is in Mami's prospective next contender that she will face her toughest opponent.

Two years ago, Liv Morgan and Ripley were tag team partners chasing gold. A year ago, The Eradicator brutally attacked Morgan, putting her out of action and costing her six months of her career.

Since her return at the Royal Rumble in January, Morgan has vowed to take everything from Ripley, including her title.

Though not officially announced, the attack on the Australian the night after WrestleMania suggests Morgan will be next in line for a shot at the title.

It is a match that will build on all that Ripley has done to this point in her run while also elevating Morgan to a tier she has not been at since cashing in Money in the Bank in 2022 and defeating Ronda Rousey to win the SmackDown Women's Championship.

New Women's Tag Team Champions

The Kabuki Warriors are, arguably, the greatest tandem in women's tag team history.

Asuka and Kairi Sane have won the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship twice and dominated the competition throughout those reigns.

Their current run has left a lot to be desired, but their most formidable opponents should help elevate their status come Backlash where Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill appear set to challenge for the gold.

The Storm and The EST of WWE have already achieved success as a team, first at 'Mania when they partnered with Naomi to defeat Asuka, Sane and Dakota Kai, and then on SmackDown where they defeated Chelsea Green and Piper Niven.

In a post-show video on the company's YouTube channel, Belair and Cargill expressed their intent to challenge for the titles sooner rather than later.

That "sooner" should be in France as WWE attempts to capitalize on the buzz and momentum of the tandem. The result should be obvious, with Belair and Cargill rolling to victory, leaving Damage CTRL reeling even more than they were following key defeats at WrestleMania.
