Biggest Storylines to Follow on the Road to WWE Backlash 2024 in France

Donald Wood

After one of the wildest WrestleMania weekends in recent history, WWE Creative has shifted gears to the 2024 edition of Backlash in France and the biggest storylines leading into the show.

While Cody Rhodes is still looking for the first challenger to his new Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, there are legitimate questions about what's next for several marquee Superstars, such as Rhea Ripley, Sami Zayn and new world heavyweight champion Damian Priest.

Here are the storylines to watch as WWE builds to the May premium live event.

Sami Zayn's First Intercontinental Championship Defense

One of the most memorable moments from WrestleMania 40 was Sami Zayn defeating Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship. After an epic battle and an unforgettable moment, the WWE Universe has shifted its focus to the titleholder's first defense.

While it is abundantly clear that Gunther deserves a rematch after his record-breaking reign as IC champion, handing him a loss when he is likely to move up to a world title scene wouldn't be good for his momentum and credibility.

That's where Chad Gable comes in.

Gable has been on the periphery of the storyline between Gunther and Zayn the whole time, and his inclusion in a rematch at Backlash would make the Triple Threat among the most anticipated bouts on the card.

The bad news for Gable is that he would be in the match to take the pinfall, protecting Gunther, who would be excluded from the decision. This would give Zayn a win over his friend, further setting up a possible heel turn for the former Olympic athlete.

Rhea Ripley's Next Challenger

On the Raw after WrestleMania, Rhea Ripley's first challenger was set with a vicious chair toss to the head by Liv Morgan. To capitalize on the momentum of beating Becky Lynch, the champion needs to smash another beloved face.

Unfortunately for Morgan fans, another main-event feud will end in a devastating loss.

During Night 1, Ripley proved she is one of WWE Creative's favorite Superstars, extending her run with the Women's World Championship and defeating one of the most popular performers in recent history.

Now, Morgan will have to prove to Ripley and the WWE Universe that she deserves to be in the same storyline as the champion, both in the ring and on the mic. While the challenger will undoubtedly take the loss, she could elevate her credibility by shining on the road to Backlash.

What Kind of Champion is Damian Priest?

When Damian Priest cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and beat Drew McIntyre for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, the excitement around the Superstar and his reign as titleholder was through the roof.

But as a heel, what kind of champion will Priest be?

After watching Jey Uso win a four-way match on Monday's WWE Raw to become the No. 1 contender, it's clear that Priest will be a fighting champion. The hope, though, is that he will be booked as a monster in the ring who dominates his challengers, similar to his title run in Ring of Honor.

Priest will be in for an absolute war against Uso, but he will surely walk out victorious after just a few days as champion. As a result, a clean and dominant win over a fan-favorite like Jey will be a great start to his reign.
