Buy or Sell Seth Rollins' Next Move, Cody Rhodes vs. Rock Timeline, More WWE Rumors

Chris Roling

Believe it or not, the conclusion of WrestleMania 40 has increased the buzz on the pro wrestling rumor mill, not quieted it.

Sure, WWE finally had Cody Rhodes finish his story by upending Roman Reigns and the Bloodline in the main event of the two-night affair.

But the nature of 'Mania and the Raw the day after is akin to a seasonal reset in other ongoing shows. Rhodes is immediately off into other feuds and stories, as is the swath of other new champions, never mind the future of Reigns and names like the Rock.

Tack on the usual rumor suspects, like the fate of current free agents and Superstars with expiring deals, and it's actually perhaps the busiest the rumor mill has been in months.

To throw fans an assist, here's a look at the most noteworthy rumors and whether fans should buy or sell on their validity.

Seth Rollins Stepping Away?

After a long, long time of playing up the blurred lines of Seth Rollins' injury outlook, it seems WWE is giving one of its top names some time to rest.

According to the Wrestling Observer (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), Rollins will be gone for roughly a month, though it gets the "hope" classification during the explanation.

That makes a ton of sense for Rollins, who is fresh off losing his title at 'Mania to Drew McIntyre—after going for 40-plus minutes in that tag match alongside Rhodes against the Bloodline the night prior.

Not only does Rollins very clearly need the time off to heal, but the old adage of absence making the heart grow fonder also applies. There's no reason to rush him off into another storyline and feud so quickly and his being away will give the Rhodes and Damian Priest-centric top title scenes room to breathe.

Rock vs. Rhodes at 'Mania?

Based on the high tension and mysterious handoff between Rock and Rhodes on the Raw after 'Mania, it would seem WWE wants the two Superstars to have a major match at a big event.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ortman), such a showdown wouldn't happen until next year's 'Mania. In fact, it might already be planned, too.

This one feels like a pretty big sell, though. We can't know Rock's Hollywood schedule, of course, but there are plenty of big pitstops like SummerSlam and international shows where such a match could happen. Given Rock's excellent look and in-ring conditioning right now, sooner rather than later might make more sense.

Beyond that, the general vibe has made it seem like Rock and Reigns might be a likelier 'Mania match a year from now while Rhodes gets to focus on other feuds.

And beyond all that, as always, plans change. As fans have noticed, that's especially the case when it comes to Rock.

Verdict: Selling

Major Push Coming for New Arrival?

It's no secret that WWE made a rather large signing recently with Jacob Fatu.

What is a secret, though, is just how and when Fatu might show up.

Wrestling Observer (h/t Ortman) appears to have a line on this though, reporting not only that Fatu will start soon, but that he's "getting a push" upon arrival.

No great shock there for anyone who has seen Fatu's in-ring work at GCW or otherwise over the years. There aren't many on the WWE roster who can do what he does in terms of size and athleticism.

And no, it sure doesn't hurt that he's cousins with The Usos and overall Bloodline adjacent. Maybe he doesn't end up in a story with that stable upon arrival, but there's no reason to think a free-agent splash like this won't get notable roster placement.

Verdict: Buying

Latest on Massive Superstar's Contract Outlook

The rumor mill continues to stick to its story—Drew McIntyre has yet to re-sign with WWE.

On this front, the latest comes from Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), which reports that while WWE is confident they will retain McIntyre, he's yet to put ink to paper on a new deal.

And again, it's just hard to imagine McIntyre would have near-best-in-company booking and prominence right now if there wasn't some sort of agreement in place. We're talking about a guy who won a major title at WrestleMania and promptly lost it—so that he can be the main player in the first feud for a returning CM Punk, of all opponents.

Sure, it is fun to speculate what McIntyre might do if he heads to say, an AEW. We've seen him succeed massively outside of WWE. But this level of high-quality booking doesn't typically seem to occur for guys with one or both feet out the proverbial door.

Verdict: Selling

Undertaker Wasn't the Plan at 'Mania?

Most professional wrestling fans would agree that the Undertaker's interference during the Night 2 main event between Rhodes and Reigns felt strange.

Particularly because in his place, most expected the glass to shatter and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin to walk out.

It turns out that was indeed the plan. According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc's Nick Miller), WWE and Austin couldn't come to terms on payment, preventing the occurrence.

Easy buy, given how natural it seemed to have Austin be the one to take down The Rock for old-time sake. Fans have since talked themselves into Undertaker making more sense for his ties to Reigns, but it's post-event coping more than anything.

On one hand, maybe Austin knows his worth and didn't like the offers, whereas 'Taker has always been the company guy. On the other, Austin not letting fans have the obvious moment and/or WWE not paying up despite seemingly paying enough for his WrestleMania 38 appearances seems unlikely.

Either way, Austin always made the most sense in the spot.

Verdict: Buying
