WWE WrestleMania 40 Results: Bayley vs. Iyo Sky and Bouts That Exceeded Expectations

Erik Beaston

WrestleMania 40 has come and gone and in its wake, fans are discussing a plethora of topics, including the best and worst matches of the card, storyline possibilities, and the what could be next for several of the top stars involved.

There are also the matches that exceeded expectations, overcoming so-so booking or moderate excitement to shine bright on the grandest stage in professional wrestling.

Some were championship bouts, one was an old-school grudge match, all were better than even the loftiest expectations placed on them by the most passionate of WWE fans.

Bayley vs. Iyo Sky

There was a moment in the build to Bayley vs. Iyo Sky for the WWE Women's Championship where the feud itself felt as though it had been de-emphasized. The result was a match that was not nearly as anticipated as it should have been given the competitors and their history.

Luckily, that did not affect the overall quality of the contest as Bayley and Sky tore the house down in one of the best matches of the entire weekend.

Bayley overcame a knee injury that left her hobbled, delivered a Bayley-to-Belly suplex and finished her former Damage CTRL teammate off with the Rose Plant.

It was a triumphant moment for The Role Model, who has long been a workhorse for the company without always benefiting from the prominence of her fellow Four Horsewomen, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair.

She earned the moment and, with the vastly underrated Sky, made sure the match was every bit as great.

LA Knight vs. AJ Styles

There an inexplicable "meh-ness" from WWE fans in the lead-in to the LA Knight vs. AJ Styles match Sunday night at WrestleMania.

With no titles on the line, family feuds to feed off of, or stories to be finished, it was a good, old-fashioned grudge match. In an industry that has sometimes been guilty of overthinking backstories, it is something today's fans are not necessary familiar with.

Because of the old-school booking of the program, the match was not nearly as anticipated. Expectations were not high, despite the fact that it involved one of the most over guys on the roster and one of the most respected of the last 20 years.

They had a very good, back-and-forth match that spilled to the arena floor at one point and showed the appropriate aggression given the history.

Ultimately, Knight caught Styles with the Blunt Force Trauma to win the match and continue a momentous last year.

Kevin Owens vs. Randy Orton vs. Logan Paul

Expectations for the United States Championship match between Logan Paul, Kevin Owens, and Randy Orton were reasonably high given the talent involved.

Still, the trio of Superstars managed to exceed expectations with a match that turned the antagonistic chants of "Gatorade" and "we want water" aimed at Paul into declarations of "this is awesome."

The near-falls, the creativity of the spots, and one of the coolest RKOs ever helped elevate the match quality en route to Paul retaining his title.

Whereas others flew under the radar, this one was appropriately featured and had solid expectations, but exceeded all of them, thanks to chemistry and Paul's continued growth and evolution as a worker.
