After touting the success of WrestleMania 40 on television, WWE has confirmed the biggest event of the year was a megahit.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, WWE announced the show in Philadelphia broke the WrestleMania gate record by 78 percent and merchandise sales record by 20 percent. Both marks were previously set at last year's event.

The show also drew a two-night total of 145,298 fans, with people from all 50 states and 64 different countries in attendance.

Other highlights touted by WWE include a 41 percent increase in viewership across both nights over last year's WrestleMania and the most socially-viewed WrestleMania with more than 660 million views over both nights.

WWE didn't announce the official gate total for WrestleMania 39, but David Bourne of the Sports Business Journal reported it was more than $18 million.

An increase of 78 percent for WrestleMania 40 would put the gate around $32 million. The event was headlined by the in-ring return of The Rock, who wrestled his first full match in 11 years on Saturday night.

The Rock and Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins on WrestleMania Saturday. The Great One pinned Rhodes after a Rock Bottom and People's Elbow to ensure the night-two main event would be contested under Bloodline Rules.

Rhodes and Reigns headlined the Sunday night show. The American Nightmare pinned Reigns to end the Tribal Chief's 1,316-day reign as undisputed WWE universal champion.

The Rhodes-Reigns match also featured cameo appearances from WWE legends John Cena and the Undertaker.

Other key matches on the show featured Rhea Ripley retaining the women's championship against Becky Lynch, Sami Zayn winning the intercontinental title from Gunther and Damian Priest pinning Drew McIntyre to win the world heavyweight title after cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase.

WWE is already teasing a match between Rhodes and The Rock for the undisputed universal championship at some point.

The company has yet to announce the date or location for WrestleMania 41, but U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis is reportedly considered one of the finalists.
