The Definitive MLB Jersey Power Rankings for 2024 Season

The first thing you learn in a 100-level public relations class is that yes, there actually is such a thing as bad publicity. Major League Baseball, Nike and Fanatics were reminded of that this spring when players, fans and just about everyone not on the payroll for one of those three companies bashed the new Vapor Premier jerseys.

Fortunately for the purposes of this article, MLB uniforms have never been a hotter topic. Before we get to ranking each team's uniforms, here are a few disclaimers:

    1. This is a countdown of the entire uniform set for all teams, not just their best or worst uniforms.

    2. City Connect uniforms, for those who have them, were treated like any other alternate uniform for the purposes of this countdown. Again, it's a breakdown of the entire uniform set for all teams.

    3. All 30 teams have the Nike Vapor Premier uniforms now. While some teams don't have last names on the back of their uniforms, all teams have been affected by the seeming downgrade in jersey quality in 2024. Therefore, none were disproportionately penalized.

With all that acknowledged, here's the B/R ranking of all 30 MLB uniform sets in 2024, from worst to first.

30. Cleveland Guardians

1 of 30

ANAHEIM, CA - SEPTEMBER 09: Cleveland Guardians designated hitter Jose Ramirez (11) in the dugout after hitting a solo home run in the first inning of an MLB baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels played on September 9, 2023 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA. When Cleveland changed nicknames prior to the 2022 season, they had a chance to completely rebrand. Instead, they picked the nickname "Guardians," which has a clear local tie, but just feels like the name of a minor league team. And the same stale navy blue and red color scheme has remained in place, with a slightly updated, still boring "C" at the forefront of their look.

The winged "G" baseball logo is the best thing the Guardians have going for them. It might be a little too out there to be on a primary cap, but it's a great alternate logo to have on their sleeves.

    Michael Clair @michaelsclair

I'm actually a huge fan of the winged "G" in the logo -- especially seeing how it so closely mirrors the look of the Guardians on the bridge. <br><br>Would rather the unis/color scheme had a larger break from the past, but ah well. <a href="https://t.co/cCGTdwQDIL">pic.twitter.com/cCGTdwQDIL</a>

Cleveland will be one of nine teams to get a City Connect uniform in 2024. It will be interesting to see what a franchise that just did a total rebrand can come up with.

29. Cincinnati Reds

2 of 30

The Reds are one of the most iconic brands in baseball, but they are badly in need of a refresh, because both the white home and gray road uniforms (pictured above) introduced in 2007 are very stale.

    MLB @MLB

Looking back at these <a href="https://twitter.com/Reds?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Reds</a> City Connect jerseys from Friday night like 😍. <a href="https://t.co/POeYcMi8kf">pic.twitter.com/POeYcMi8kf</a>

There's at least some pop to the red alternate tops that read "Reds" in cursive, but they do feel a bit more like a spring training top than a regular season one.

The black City Connect jerseys introduced in May 2023 (above) seem to be one that you either love or hate, but the tiebreaker may be how impractical it is to wear an all-black uniform set in the middle of the summer.

    Stirrups Now! @uniformcritic

I'm just not a fan of the Reds current uniforms, can't beat Big Red Machine look even with elastic belts &amp; pullovers <a href="https://t.co/j2CUdvTaru">pic.twitter.com/j2CUdvTaru</a>

V-necked uniforms aren't prevalent in today's game, but what we'll call the Big Red Machine Era home uniforms (above) would be a drastic improvement over what Cincinnati wears currently.

These were the primary home uniforms of the Reds from 1972-1992, and they still hold up well. The gray road V-necks were pretty sharp too.

28. Tampa Bay Rays

3 of 30

TORONTO, ON - SEPTEMBER 26: Tampa Bay Rays Outfield Randy Arozarena (56) reacts during the MLB baseball regular season game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays on September 29, 2023, at Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON, Canada. In 2008, Tampa Bay dropped the "Devil" from their nickname, and just became the Rays. They've also tried to muddy the waters on whether they are named the Rays after stingrays (which was the original concept), or just because the sun rays of Florida.

Frankly, while they've had much more success as the Rays than they did as the expansion Devil Rays, the further we move away from the name update, the more it looks like a mistake. The uniforms introduced in 2008—including the primary road jerseys featured above—feel like the branding of an orange juice company.

There's a real edge to the gradient Devil Rays script and stingray hats, which are worn for all Friday home games at Tropicana Field.

    FOX Sports: MLB @MLBONFOX

The Rays announced they will wear their "Devil Rays" retro uniforms every Friday home game this season 🤩🙌 <a href="https://t.co/R4UWiFfyNg">pic.twitter.com/R4UWiFfyNg</a>

The Rays will be one of nine teams that introduce City Connect uniforms in 2024. They would be wise to lean into the Devil.

27. Washington Nationals

4 of 30

Since winning the 2019 World Series, the Nationals roster has gotten progressively worse. So have their uniforms.

Yes, it was just noted that the Reds would benefit from bringing back their V-neck jerseys. You know who didn't need V-necks? The Nationals. And yet, here they are, with the "Vintage Capital W" at the forefront of a new home alternate jersey (below), which looks like something from a beer-league softball team.

    Washington Nationals @Nationals

    🔓 D.C. deets 🔒<br> alt addition <a href="https://t.co/j1somFIe1R">pic.twitter.com/j1somFIe1R</a>

Additionally, the Nationals seem to be moving away from the "Curly W," which, while often compared to the logo of Walgreens, is historically associated with baseball in D.C.

The latest sign of this is an update to the team's road uniforms in 2024 (seen below), which feels like something out of a movie where they didn't want to pay to put the actual jerseys in the film, so they came up with a generic alternate that was cheap to produce.

    NFL Fashion Advice @fashion_nfl

The Nationals tweaked their road grays. I can get behind the red, white, and blue trim. But ditching the script feels like a downgrade. Curious what others think. <a href="https://t.co/2spCPtatK5">pic.twitter.com/2spCPtatK5</a>

For 2024, the Nationals have eliminated numbers off the front of their home white jerseys (pictured at the top of the slide) and navy blue alternates. The cursive "Nationals" script has also been straightened a bit, which feels like a change no one was asking for.

The best thing the Nationals have going for them is their cherry blossom City Connect uniforms, which were first introduced during the 2022 season.

Unfortunately, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reported this offseason that they plan to retire their City Connect uniforms after the 2024 season.

26. Houston Astros

5 of 30

The Astros have had so much success over the last seven seasons, reaching the ALCS every year, winning three AL pennants and two World Series titles. But for a team with a rich uniform history, they haven't looked very good while doing so.

When the Astros moved to the AL in 2013, they introduced a new primary uniform set, which clearly paid homage to the early days of the franchise, including bringing back the navy blue caps with a white "H" over an orange star.

However, the franchise really erred in not reincorporating the shooting star (below) that went across a couple different home jerseys from 1965-1974.

    Spring Training Salazar @igTXSalazar

    1972 <a href="https://twitter.com/astros?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@astros</a> Shooting Star zipper jersey <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TakeItBack?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#TakeItBack</a> <a href="https://t.co/MPXOV6wG6r">pic.twitter.com/MPXOV6wG6r</a>

While teams like the Giants and Orioles have managed to pull off orange tops, the Astros' alternate threads aren't very good and make you realize how underwhelming their current script is.

The worst part of the Astros uniform rotation comes in two alternates they've since added.

The blue tops with rainbow guts on the side—which seem to be worn for most Framber Valdez starts, as seen at the top of the slide—aren't fit to even be worn for spring training. And yet, the Astros wore them when they clinched the 2022 World Series title.

    FOX Sports: MLB @MLBONFOX

The Astros revealed their 'Space City' Nike City Connect uniforms 🚀⭐️<br><br>📷: <a href="https://twitter.com/astros?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@astros</a> <a href="https://t.co/QcSrwrmtpM">pic.twitter.com/QcSrwrmtpM</a>

The City Connect uniforms introduced in 2022 (above) are designed to look like space suits, which at least has a theme and a connection to the franchise's location.

But even though the hats are cool, the "Space City" uniforms just feel like a better version of the bad navy blue tops.

For the franchise that created the iconic "Tequila Sunrise" jerseys in the 1970s, the current uniform rotation is just too simple. Give some color, but make it a better shade than the orange tops. And inject some life into the dull script font.

25. Miami Marlins

6 of 30

MIAMI, FLORIDA - SEPTEMBER 16: Luis Arraez #3 of the Miami Marlins rounds the bases after hitting a home run against the Atlanta Braves during the first inning of the game at loanDepot park on September 16, 2023 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Megan Briggs/Getty Images)

The Marlins have arguably the best City Connect uniforms (above), which are a nod to the Cuban Sugar Kings, a minor league team that played from 1954-1960. Even if they aren't traditional Marlins colors, they feel very Miami.

In terms of the Marlins' current primary uniforms, they still aren't great, but there were some improvements this offseason made to the set introduced prior to the 2019 season.

Finally, the "Midnight Black" jerseys have primary white script writing, as opposed to the unreadable black-on-black. Also, the "Miami Blue" jerseys are a new alternate to the regular season, after having been a popular color in spring training for a few years.

    Just Baseball @JustBB_Media

The Marlins have updated their black and blue jerseys and announced the blues will now be in their rotation during the 2024 season.<br><br>Thoughts on the new looks?<br><br>(Via <a href="https://twitter.com/Marlins?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Marlins</a>) <a href="https://t.co/glzAcaggAZ">pic.twitter.com/glzAcaggAZ</a>

But a year ago, the Fish wore their teal throwback jerseys for every Friday home game as they celebrated the franchise's 20th anniversary. The reception was incredible.

It feels like anything short of updating the old "Florida Marlins" jerseys to reflect that the team has officially been from Miami since 2012 and bringing back teal permanently will be a disappointment.

24. Texas Rangers

7 of 30

ARLINGTON, TX - OCTOBER 28: Corey Seager #5 of the Texas Rangers throws to first during Game 2 of the 2023 World Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Saturday, October 28, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. Cooper Neill/MLB Photos via Getty Images

The Rangers can't seem to decide whether they want to fully embrace the cursive script (above) that they originally utilized from 1984-1993, or just mix it in with the more modern looking uniforms they initially introduced in red in 1994, and have largely used in blue since 2000.

MLB Dressed To The Nines Exhibit/Baseball Hall of Fame

Since 2020, the Rangers' home and road scripts have been different templates (above). Neither is bad, but it feels like one of these years, they need to pick one and make it uniform for both their home and road jerseys.

    FOX Sports: MLB @MLBONFOX

What is bad are the team's City Connect uniforms (above), which were introduced in April 2022 and drew pretty much universal criticism.

23. Kansas City Royals

8 of 30

    Ed Zurga/Getty Images

Kansas City's uniform set is a mixed bag, which is reflected in their ranking here.

At home, the Royals are generally excellent looking. Their white home uniforms with "Royals" written across the chest in, appropriately, royal blue, are clean. As are their alternate powder blue tops, which look good both with the white pants pictured above or matching powder blue pants.

    FOX Sports: MLB @MLBONFOX

However, while the fountain theme was a cool concept for the City Connect uniforms that the Royals introduced in 2022 (above), the jerseys and caps just didn't come out looking very good.

Additionally, the Royals' road grays and blue tops looked much better when they also read "Royals" across the chest than the basic "Kansas City" script they switched to in 2022.

    Just Baseball @JustBB_Media

The Royals have revealed they're partnering with QuikTrip to be their jersey patch sponsor for this upcoming season <a href="https://t.co/CY6SKtOLK0">pic.twitter.com/CY6SKtOLK0</a>

Even this offseason was one step forward, two steps back from the Royals from an aesthetic standpoint. It's great that the Royals avoided the disastrous Nike/Fanatics small NOB lettering, but their red uniform ad patch (above) looks horrendous.

22. Los Angeles Angels

9 of 30

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 01: Mike Trout #27 of the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 01, 2023 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)
    Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

The Angels are a team that doesn't need to refresh its look, but if it did, it wouldn't be the worst thing.

The font used on the home white, road grays and alternate red tops is cool, but the overall results from the uniform set introduced in 2002 are mixed.

The Angels have one of the best road grays, with the contrast between the gray and red on their jerseys popping even more when players wear long red sleeves underneath. But the home whites and alternate red tops worn both at home and on the road feel stale.

    Jake @D1SCHER

These are the angels best throwbacks and I won't hear otherwise<br><br>Nike needs to modernize these and make these our home / road jerseys <a href="https://t.co/9sm5h0oMt4">pic.twitter.com/9sm5h0oMt4</a>

According to Paul Lukas of Uni Watch, the Angels will wear their pullover throwback tops (above) as an alternate in 2024. Different variations of this uniform have been worn throughout Angels history, but what really makes it great is the alternate logo with a halo over the outline of California on the sleeve (whichever one the ad patch isn't on, depending if you are left or right-handed.) This patch was worn by the California Angels from 1970-1985, both on the home and road uniforms.

If the Angels wanted to do a refresh, they could lean into those jerseys both at home and the road, although there is a fair argument to be made that they look vintage, which is cool as a throwback but maybe not meant to be a primary uniform in 2024.

Their tremendous surfboard City Connect uniforms (top of the slide) could also be made into the primary home uniforms, with it seemingly pretty easy to replicate in gray for the road.

Los Angeles doesn't have bad uniforms, so it doesn't need to update its look. But if it did, it could probably climb up this list.

21. New York Mets

10 of 30

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 27: Francisco Lindor #12 of the New York Mets celebrates his solo home run in the fourth inning against the Miami Marlins during game two of a double header at Citi Field on September 27, 2023 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Elsa/Getty Images

There aren't any strong critiques to be made of the Mets uniform kit, but while their home pinstripes are clean and the road grays are solid, not a ton stands out relative to teams higher on this list.

While some traditionalists don't like their black alternate tops, they bring back memories of Mike Piazza crushing home runs at Shea Stadium, and most were pretty keen on them returning as a Friday evening home uniform in 2021.

However, what we would argue was the standout jersey in the Mets repertoire has been greatly diminished by Nike/Fanatics (below):

    NFL Fashion Advice @fashion_nfl

The Mets removed the white outline and blue piping from their black uniforms. <a href="https://t.co/3KSRyUn5nI">https://t.co/3KSRyUn5nI</a> <a href="https://t.co/DEV0s6N7br">pic.twitter.com/DEV0s6N7br</a>

Granted, this is a replica. The actual jersey will also feature a number on the front, as Mets icon Keith Hernandez recently learned. But simplifying something no one asked to be simplified is another misstep by Nike/Fanatics, perhaps just aimed at saving money. And that's stupid.

The Mets will get a City Connect uniform this season, so there will be another addition to this set in the near future.

20. Arizona Diamondbacks

11 of 30

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA - MARCH 13: Corbin Carroll #7 of the Arizona Diamondbacks runs to the dugout during the Spring Training game against the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on March 13, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona. (Photo by John E. Moore III/Getty Images)
    John E. Moore III/Getty Images

The Diamondbacks refreshed their uniform set after a Cinderella run to the World Series a season ago, and they improved their standing in the league with the updates.

However, a Pete Carroll in Super Bowl XLIX-esque refusal to do the most obvious thing in the world keeps the Snakes in the bottom half of this list.

Overall, this new uniform set is a mixed bag.

    Chris Creamer | SportsLogos.Net @sportslogosnet

The Arizona Diamondbacks have unveiled four new uniforms for the 2024 season. Sand is out and teal is WAY in! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Dbacks?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Dbacks</a> <br><br>My story with photos, details, and a conversation with the <a href="https://twitter.com/Dbacks?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Dbacks</a> about the change right here: <a href="https://t.co/tQu6WvPZhw">https://t.co/tQu6WvPZhw</a> <a href="https://t.co/nWs4GzEl6h">pic.twitter.com/nWs4GzEl6h</a>

The primary cream home uniforms are strong, and there's a case to be made that the teal trim around the "A" logo wasn't necessary for this uniform. Nonetheless, they nailed that.

In theory, the black alternate home tops with teal piping are cool, but in the extremely dark Chase Field, it's fair to wonder if they'll pop as much as they do in a photoshoot.

Both the gray road uniforms and "Sedona" red alternate uniforms aren't offensive, but they also feel like ones that will be cycled out for the next refresh in a few years. At least the red top now has the full "Diamondbacks" written out, as opposed to "D-Backs," which looked like it said something else that starts with "D-Ba" and ends in an S.

    Phil Hecken @PhilHecken

Arizona Diamondbacks fans implore team to return to purple and teal uniform: 'It's time' <a href="https://t.co/0QQlIy1wUX">https://t.co/0QQlIy1wUX</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/UniWatch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@UniWatch</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/AnthonyMEmerson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@AnthonyMEmerson</a>

But while Arizona's "Serpentines" City Connect uniforms are tremendous, this uniform set still leaves you to wonder why the Diamondbacks won't just fully bring back the purple and teal threads they wore from their inception in 1998 through 2006.

Even if this new uniform set is better than its predecessor, is there anyone who would take it over the Randy Johnson-era threads pictured above?

19. Minnesota Twins

12 of 30

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - OCTOBER 03: Carlos Correa #4 of the Minnesota Twins takes the field during pregame ceremonies before Game 1 of the Wild Card Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Daniel Shirey/MLB Photos via Getty Images

The Twins refreshed their uniform set prior to the 2023 season, delivering a set that has two very strong home uniforms and a pair of pretty brutal ones for the road.

    FOX Sports: MLB @MLBONFOX

    A look at the Minnesota Twins new uniforms 🔥<br><br>📷: <a href="https://twitter.com/Twins?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Twins</a> <a href="https://t.co/hUJ4PyiQzi">pic.twitter.com/hUJ4PyiQzi</a>

There's a simplicity to the home white uniforms in the four-jersey set, but it doesn't feel basic. The tri-colored batting helmets that go with the home uniforms—white front, navy blue back and red brim—really give these threads a crispness.

Minnesota is set to get a City Connect uniform in 2024, which makes you wonder why they didn't wait a season to release their tremendous "Twin Cities" alternates. This is the rare uniform that looks good with something other than the city or team name across the front of it. The navy blue Twins cap with the off-white Twin Cities logo is perfection. There's a case to be made that these are among the best alternate uniforms in baseball right now.

Unfortunately, both the primary road grays and road alternate navy blue tops drag down the set. The navy blue top is just uncreative, and far too many teams rely on that color as an alternate today. As far as the road gray, the script used for "Minnesota" doesn't look very good, and the pinstripes are too faint. Either commit to pinstripes are don't. These look like the Twins were stuck in between.

As many have also pointed out, the "M" north star hats that the Twins wear on the road appear to use a very similar "M" to what the Marlins did from 2012-2018.

18. Boston Red Sox

13 of 30

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 18: Rafael Devers #11 of the Boston Red Sox in action against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on August 18, 2023 in the Bronx borough of New York City. The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 8-3. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)
    Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

The Red Sox are another team that looks much better at home than they do on the road.

Both the classic home whites and alternate red tops Boston wears at Fenway Park are clean and tremendous. Props to them for being one of the few teams that can pull off a red top.

It seems obvious that they would considering they are called the Red Sox, but the Reds and plenty of other teams who have red as a primary color are unable to do it.

Neither of the road uniforms the Red Sox wear—their primary grays or the alternate navy blue tops pictured at the top of the slide—are atrocious. But the navy blue tops look more like a t-shirt and feel unserious when the Red Sox are wearing them in late-season games.

Red Sox is one of the longest-running nicknames in baseball, which Boston shifted to in 1908 after seven seasons as the "Americans." But compared to other classic franchises—such as the Yankees, Dodgers and Tigers—it feels like Boston's uniforms fall short.

17. Chicago Cubs

14 of 30

PHOENIX, AZ - SEPTEMBER 17: Chicago Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger (24) fields a ball at first base during a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 17th, 2023, at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ. (Photo by Zac BonDurant/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)
Zac BonDurant/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Cubs currently have a four-uniform mix, and like many teams featured at the portion of the countdown, there's plenty to like, and equally as much to dislike.

The Good: Chicago's home pinstripes pop at Wrigley Field. The Cubbies have worn pinstripes at home since 1957. Should the Cubs bring back the version of the baby bear that was on their sleeves from 1962-1975, and then again from 1977-78? Yes, as you can see in the image below, that was pretty awesome. But it's a minor nitpick.

Marc Okkonen/Baseball Hall of Fame Dressed To The Nines Exhibit

Also good: The blue tops that the Cubs wear as a road alternate. Not many teams can pull off having a solid-colored top as a primary road uniform, but the Cubs did it from 1982-1989, and should consider making their blue jerseys what they always wear away from home.

The bad: The primary road gray uniforms the Cubs wear (pictured at the top of the slide) are one of the most stale looks in baseball. Even with a blue hat and blue sleeves underneath, this is just not a nice uniform to look at.

Also bad: The navy blue on navy blue "Wrigleyville" City Connect jerseys stink.

16. Milwaukee Brewers

15 of 30

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 30: Christian Yelich #22 of the Milwaukee Brewers reacts against the Chicago Cubs during the eighth inning at Wrigley Field on August 30, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)
    Michael Reaves/Getty Images

The Brewers nailed their 2020 uniform refresh, and if not for a terrible City Connect uniform, they would probably be higher on this list.

Prior to the 2020 season, they brought back the iconic "ball-in-glove" as their primary cap logo, while putting some tasteful modern twists on their new uniforms.

    Milwaukee Brewers @Brewers

    New threads: A thread. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/glovestory?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#glovestory</a> <a href="https://t.co/b6S21C4ROs">pic.twitter.com/b6S21C4ROs</a>

The home cream and classic pinstripes are strong, but the road uniforms are what make this uniform set a smashing success. The "M" logo on the sleeve of the primary road grays give it some life.

On top of that, while the idea of a navy blue jersey with a cap that's yellow and navy blue sounds bad, the execution is really good and is a nice alternate to mix in to break up the gray on road trips.

    MLB @MLB

But the City Connect uniforms that the team introduced in June 2022 (above) are terrible. The "MKE" hat is illegible. The charcoal grill sleeve patch is goofy. And "Brew Crew" written across the chest looks like a beer league softball team. It's the "+1" in this uniform set that really drags down the other four.

15. Chicago White Sox

There's perhaps not one great uniform in the set of the White Sox, but there's a lot of very good and you can definitely make a case for them being a tad higher.

Chicago's pinstripes are solid, but it would be a fair critique to say they look pretty similar to the home uniforms of the Rockies and Yankees and are the worst of that trio.

No problem, the White Sox primary road grays (above) are tremendous. The cursive "Chicago" script across the chest is a perfect compliment to the "Sox" logo featured both on the cap and sleeve.

The White Sox also have three popular alternate tops.

Too many teams in sports today have black alternate jerseys, but the White Sox black tops—which are mixed in both at home and on the road—feel appropriate with the club's color scheme.

The white, red and navy blue "Sox" jerseys are cool as a throwback, paying homage to the primary home uniforms that the team wore from 1982-1986.

Chicago's "Southside" City Connect uniforms—which debuted in June 2021—have also become pretty popular. The CC concept (above) features black jerseys and pants with white pinstripes.

One area that could be improved is if the White Sox just wore their regular black hats, as opposed to the "CHI" hat, which looks like something from an airport gift shop.

14. Colorado Rockies

17 of 30

The Rockies have a polarizing uniform set, and some of it comes down to whether you A) like the color purple and B) are fond of Colorado's license plate.

If you answered yes to either or both of those questions, then this is a really good quartet of uniforms, because the home pinstripes and road grays are strong, featuring just the right amount of purple to differentiate their white and gray uniforms from others.

Once upon a time, Colorado had issues finding a universal shade of purple. But they heard the critiques, and as you can see in the picture of franchise staple Charlie Blackmon at the top of this slide, their purple alternates really pop now when paired with a black cap that features a purple brim.

If the Yankees or Tigers introduced a purple uniform, it would be a disaster. But the Rockies are a newer franchise, who have the whole "purple mountain majesties" angle that makes this a perfect color to be part of their repertoire.

    MLB Life @MLBLife

Not everyone is going to like the license plate-themed City Connect uniforms (above) that the Rockies introduced in May 2022, but from here, they really understood the goal of the CC program. They might look even better with white pants, but both combinations really feel representative of the team's home state.

Lastly, the Rockies get bonus points for finally retiring their black tank tops. As Paul Lukas of Uni Watch noted, the final vests in baseball haven't actually been worn since 2021, but they are now out of MLB's style guide for the first time.

13. Pittsburgh Pirates

18 of 30

    Megan Briggs/Getty Images

The Pirates are a team that might be in the top 10 if not for a City Connect uniform that's so offensive it has to dock—no Pirate pun intended—them a few spots.

Let's start with the good: Pittsburgh's road uniforms are very sharp. The cursive "Pittsburgh script" works very well with the primary road grays, and probably even better in the solid black tops that Andrew McCutchen is wearing at the top of this slide.

While the Pirates two home jerseys—their primary white uniforms and an alternate black top that features the "P" logo on the left side of the chest—are less remarkable, they are still solid and would make for a strong set if the Pirates only had four jerseys.

    Tim Kelly @TimKellySports

The Pirates' City Connect uniforms -- especially the batting helmets -- are an abomination. <a href="https://t.co/6gE3P8KnoH">pic.twitter.com/6gE3P8KnoH</a>

Unfortunately, the City Connect uniforms that the Pirates introduced last June (above) are horrifying. Beyond just the general laziness of just slapping "PGH" across the chest, the batting helmets—which look like they were spray-painted about 15 minutes before first pitch—are one of the worst in the history of the sport.

If the Pirates are smart, they'll ride things out with these City Connect uniforms for a few years, before ditching them and bringing back the V-necked yellow tops with black pants they wore as a throwback from 2016-2019, which featured a pillbox cap.

12. Philadelphia Phillies

19 of 30

The reality is that the Phillies probably only need four uniforms in their set: their home pinstripes, road grays, alternate creams (above) and throwback powder blues. But they had five a year ago, and they will have five in 2024.

Here's the catch: Because of Nike's "4+1" rule, the Phillies red "getaway day" tops that were worn as road alternate tops over the last three seasons are out. In are yet-to-be-released City Connect uniforms, which are expected to debut in April.

It's unclear what the hats and pants will look like, but the jerseys—inspired by the City of Philadelphia flag—seemingly leaked this offseason, and didn't get great early reviews.

    Paul Lukas @UniWatch

Report: Phillies to Debut City Connect Uni in April <a href="https://t.co/ah94v24gqQ">https://t.co/ah94v24gqQ</a>

It just doesn't feel like a team that's called "the Phillies" needed a City Connect jersey. Their entire existence pays homage to the city. Not that the red tops were great, but they were at least Phillies colors. This will also give the team four home uniforms—along with pinstripes, cream (worn for day games at Citizens Bank Park) and powder blue (worn for Thursday games at CBP)—and one road uniform. It's going to throw everything off-kilter.

The saving grace for the Phillies, though, is that their red pinstripes, the primary home uniforms since 1992, are excellent. The creams—which have been worn as an alternate since 2008 and were inspired by the home uniforms from 1946-1949—are also great, as you can see at the top of this slide. Bryce Harper even said the creams are his favorite. And the gray road jerseys, particularly when they have red sleeves underneath them, are strong.

Even if the City Connects prove to be a dud and leave the Phillies with a disproportionate amount of home uniforms, their overall set is still very strong.

11. Baltimore Orioles

20 of 30

It's hard to overstate how big of an upgrade that the Orioles made in 2012 when they ditched the more realistic bird logo in favor of the cartoon bird, on a three-toned home cap, as modeled above by new Baltimore ace Corbin Burnes.

In terms of their jerseys, the orange and black color scheme works well for four of their five uniforms—the home whites, road grays, alternate black tops and alternate orange tops. The orange and black pops particularly on the road grays, a jersey that some other teams struggle to keep from being dull.

Additionally, Maryland has arguably the coolest state flag, and the left sleeve patch that the Orioles have on those four uniforms—visible in the picture of Burnes atop the slide—is a cool touch.

    Baltimore Orioles @Orioles

    It's Baltimore versus the world. <a href="https://t.co/zk73GPNFjR">pic.twitter.com/zk73GPNFjR</a>

However, Maryland's excellent state flag makes you wonder why the Orioles couldn't have come up with a better City Connect concept than the uniforms they what they introduced last May (seen above). Baltimore already had a a much better black alternate, and it's not practical during a sport primarily played in the summer to have two different black uniforms. This also just isn't a good uniform.

Nonetheless, the four longtime uniforms in Baltimore's set are good enough to overcome an underwhelming City Connect and put them on the cusp of the top 10.

10. Toronto Blue Jays

21 of 30

Drake is perhaps most responsible for Toronto—or as he would call it, "The 6"—moving to the forefront of the debate about cool North American cities over the last 15 years. But let's face it, he had a lot of material to work with, including the Blue Jays cap and jerseys.

The only legitimate complaint about Toronto's threads: They aren't the Green Jays, so the TD Ameritrade ad patch (seen below), which is lime green, is an eyesore.

    Tim Kelly @TimKellySports

Fighting against jersey ads is lost cause, but they should at least have to match the team colors. They aren't the Green Jays. <a href="https://t.co/ioIlmoSFbg">pic.twitter.com/ioIlmoSFbg</a>

Everything else, though, is tremendous. The Blue Jays might have the greatest font in professional sports, and the bird on the front of their uniforms is noticeable without being obnoxious like a 1990s NBA jersey.

Also worth noting: While Toronto's home whites and alternate blue tops often get most of the love, their road grays (seen at the top of the slide) are elite. The Montreal Expos probably had the best modern grays that baseball has seen, but the Blue Jays have continued to make Canadian jersey fanatics proud with their road threads.

The Roy Halladay-era rebrand—meaning the jerseys Toronto wore from 2004-2011—probably get too much hate. But they pale in comparison to what the Blue Jays have worn since 2012, when they went back to a look much more in line with what they wore from their inception in 1977.

9. Atlanta Braves

    Kevin D. Liles/Atlanta Braves/Getty Images

The Braves introduced their current home whites and road grays in 1987, pairing them with the navy blue caps that feature the capital "A" and red brim that the franchise had previously worn for their first two seasons playing in Atlanta, 1966 and 1967.

In that time, they have won 21 division titles and two World Series, employing Hall of Famers like Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, along with superstars like Ronald Acuña Jr., Freddie Freeman and Andruw Jones.

Because of a combination of factors—winning mixed with the prominence of Atlanta-based rappers wearing this hat—the Braves primary uniforms have become among the coolest in the sport.

There's plenty to like about the three alternate uniforms that the Braves currently have, but also some mild critiques.

Atlanta changed the piping on their navy blue alternate tops—which are featured prominently on the road—from gray to red. This may have gotten lost in all the other uniform complaints this offseason, but it's definitely a downgrade.

The red tops that the Braves wear for Friday night games at Truist Park have been refined, but there's a case to be made that with so many other red teams, particularly in the NL, another red jersey wasn't necessary.

    Tim Kelly @TimKellySports

The Braves City Connect uniforms look like a knock-off that would be sold by an unlicensed vendor outside of the stadium when compared to the originals. <a href="https://twitter.com/UniWatch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@UniWatch</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/PhilHecken?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@PhilHecken</a> <br><br>(Getty Images) <a href="https://t.co/4x8iTzOVzk">pic.twitter.com/4x8iTzOVzk</a>

Finally, if the Braves' City Connect uniforms were a new concept, they would be much easier to appreciate. However, Atlanta wore an extremely similar uniform at home from 1972-1975, and fairly frequently as a throwback in modern times.

As you can see above, when you compare the City Connects to the original, it's disappointing.

8. Seattle Mariners

    Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

What the Mariners call "Northwest Green" is such a uniquely cool color that it's allowed them to pull off a few things other teams wouldn't be successful in doing.

Forced to eliminate one of their five prior uniforms to comply with Nike's "4+1" rule, the Mariners shelved their road gray uniforms prior to the 2023 season. Though it can be argued those were pretty good, Seattle is one of the only teams with a good navy blue top that works as a primary road uniform.

Not only is Northwest Green a great accent color in Seattle's white home and navy blue road uniforms, but it makes for a tremendous primary color for a uniform top, as seen at the top of the slide. The Northwest Green tops work as both a home and road alternate.

    Seattle Mariners @Mariners

    💎 Spinning gems 💎 <a href="https://t.co/AymdCGnS4g">pic.twitter.com/AymdCGnS4g</a>

Elsewhere, the cream uniforms that the Mariners have worn for Sunday games (above) at T-Mobile Park since 2015 are one of the best looks in the sport.

    Seattle Mariners @Mariners

    Let's get after it. <br><br>&gt;&gt; <a href="https://t.co/JVo94SMeah">https://t.co/JVo94SMeah</a> &lt;&lt; <a href="https://t.co/4ccmphXyua">pic.twitter.com/4ccmphXyua</a>

And you know what? Even if the City Connect uniforms that the Mariners introduced in May of 2023 (above) probably weren't necessary, they're pretty cool. The trident logo on the caps is a neat throwback, and the blue/black color scheme is sharp.

Maybe the pants didn't need to be black, but the black-brimmed cap is very good, and black long sleeves underneath these jerseys drastically improve how they look.

7. San Francisco Giants

24 of 30

There is just something perfect about the cream home uniforms (top of slide) that the Giants wear. It makes you think of Barry Bonds hitting a ball into McCovey Cove, or Tim Lincecum winning back-to-back Cy Young Awards.

There's a modern nostalgia to it, probably also driven by having the beautiful backdrop of Oracle Park, perhaps the nicest stadium in baseball.

If there was one complaint to make about the Giants' home uniforms it's that they added last names on the back of them in the 2021 season, marking the first time since 1999 that San Francisco had last names on the back of its home jerseys. It's a small nitpick, but the home creams looked much better without a name on the back of them from 2000-2020.

The Giants' road "San Francisco" jerseys are forgettable and offer a window into why they are only at No. 7, despite having a top-five home uniform and some nice alternates.

Speaking of alternates, their orange alternate tops—worn for Friday games at Oracle Park—are the perfect example of not all loud colors necessarily being bad. They are bold, but they still fit well in the rotation for such a storied franchise.

There's a case to be made that the Giants' black alternate tops feel a little spring-trainy—which is because they are also worn in spring training. But there's no debate that it's a good-looking uniform. It might even work better with gray pants as a road alternate than it does at home with white pants. The only issue is black is a hot color to wear in certain cities during the summer.

    SFGiants @SFGiants

    Home, sweet home 🌁 <a href="https://t.co/obqUArkYw7">pic.twitter.com/obqUArkYw7</a>

Even if the City Connect uniforms (above) aren't very good, they are hardly the worst the program has produced. The concept of fog over the Golden Gate Bridge is well thought out, and the matte orange batting helmets with it are cool. This is a design that you feel could be tweaked and maybe be a hit if the right buttons are pushed.

Overall, while the Giants could stand to improve their road jerseys, the highs of this uniform set are very high.

6. Detroit Tigers

25 of 30

    Megan Briggs/Getty Images

For a long time, the Tigers have held out as one of the few franchises in baseball to only have a home and road uniform, with no alternates.

That will change in 2024, as the franchise is slated to get a City Connect uniform. And frankly, it feels like a team named after a ferocious animal should be able to put together an interesting City Connect concept. Hopefully, they aren't just jerseys that say "Detroit vs. Everybody."

In any event, the reason the Tigers are taking such a risk adding a City Connect uniform is that the two they have right now are perfect.

The home whites are iconic, regardless of where you stand on the "Old English D" debate. Detroit's road uniforms are newer, as they were introduced in 1995 and got their current cap in 1998. The cursive "Detroit" script in navy blue with orange trim is the perfect amount of color to keep a gray jersey from being dull. And the orange "D" on the cap matches perfectly with the road jerseys.

Detroit is one team that it feels like if its City Connects are a disaster, it will wear them sparingly for the required amount of years, and then quickly move off of them. No one ever asked for the two-uniform rotation to be messed with.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers

The "LA" Dodger cap is legendary, as are the home whites worn at Dodger Stadium. Take your pick on the road, both gray uniforms—one that reads "Los Angeles" and the other "Dodgers"— are strong. The red numbering on the front of the jerseys has always been a cool touch too.

Had the Dodgers just opted out of the City Connect program, they would be even higher. Instead, the multiple variations of their first CC uniforms (below) were such a disaster that after three years, they are going to become the first team to get a second CC uniform, which will come at some point in 2024.

    MLB Life @MLBLife

The <a href="https://twitter.com/Dodgers?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Dodgers</a> have been wearing white pants with their City Connect uniforms instead of their original blue pants<br><br>Which do you like better? 🤔 <a href="https://t.co/Qc8y2rcNxg">pic.twitter.com/Qc8y2rcNxg</a>

Maybe these will be an improvement over their predecessors, but you almost feel like if the Dodgers met the speculated threshold of wearing their City Connect uniforms for three years, they should have just shelved them and gone back to their classic three uni rotation.

Perhaps this shouldn't be assumed, but it does feel like there's nowhere to go but up from the all-blue City Connect uniforms. And if that proves to be true, the rest of the Dodgers uniform rotation is so strong that it warrants being in the top five.

4. San Diego Padres

27 of 30

Most of the various combinations of brown and yellow that the Padres wore from their inception in 1969 through 1990 were too much. From 2002-2019, their uniforms were flat out boring. But they finally perfected the refresh in 2020 and developed an elite uniform set.

The home Padres uniforms pictured at the top of the slide strike the right balance of incorporating brown and yellow without being obnoxious. The matching sand brown pinstripes (below) are an excellent example of pinstripes working not just at home, but on the road.

The brown road tops are more in line with what the Padres wore in the early 1980s, but they are a solid uniform when worn on occasion.

    Baseball Bros @BaseballBros

The Padres new uniforms for 2020 season <a href="https://t.co/jB0rXOKbN8">pic.twitter.com/jB0rXOKbN8</a>

The Swinging Friar logo on the sleeves is the best part of the uniform. The Padres were the first team to add a uniform sponsorship leading up to the 2023 season. While the Motorola patch is obnoxiously large, they've managed to keep it brown, so it actually matches with their uniforms. And then the Friar patch is on whatever sleeve the ad isn't, depending on the player's handedness.

San Diego's City Connect uniforms (below) are loud and certainly not for everyone. They do give off some Miami Vice vibes, but the Padres at least made an attempt to create a uniform that will appeal to younger fans and is rooted in the city's history, which was the goal of the City Connect program.

They get an A for effort, even if the grade on the jerseys themselves would probably be lower.

    FOX Sports: MLB @MLBONFOX

Finally, the Padres have always done a nice job with the camouflage uniforms they wear for Sunday home games.

Where other teams and leagues have seemingly just attempted to capitalize off of the desire from many to show their support for the military, San Diego has a rich military history, so having camo alternates actually make sense.

3. New York Yankees

There's no uniform more iconic in baseball than the Yankee pinstripes.

Since 1915, the Yankees have worn pinstripes at home, and the "NY" logo has been featured on the left side of the chest continuously since 1936.

It's been noted on this list that under Nike/Fanatics, some jerseys have been simplified to their detriment. But the more simplistic look that the Yankees are going with on the road this year—gone is the white outline around "New York" and the numbers that Uni Watch's Paul Lukas noted was added in 1973—is at worst a neutral change and might actually be an improvement.

    Yankees Videos @snyyankees

Here's how the Yankees' road uniforms will look this season <a href="https://t.co/aVSMAMZbwX">pic.twitter.com/aVSMAMZbwX</a>

One of the added benefits for the Yankees is they famously don't have names on the back of either of their home or road uniforms, so they haven't had to deal with the minuscule names on back as part of the new Nike/Fanatics uniforms debuting in 2024.

Additionally, there's something cool about the Yankees just having home pinstripes and road grays. While it once seemed all 30 teams would get a City Connect uniform at some point, the Yankees have resisted so far, unlike the Dodgers and Tigers, two other teams that had cases for doing so.

Owner Hal Steinbrenner said in an interview last summer that the Yankees were not "having any serious conversations about doing it," in regards to adding a third jersey in the form of a City Connect. Good for them.

2. St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals are one of nine teams that plan to introduce City Connect uniforms in 2024, which probably can only downgrade their uniform set. In the meantime, it's hard to find anything not to like about the four uniforms St. Louis has in rotation right now.

Across all threads that the Cardinals have, the pair of perched birds are present and create one of the most iconic aesthetic staples that the sport has to offer.

The Cardinals have strong standard home whites and road grays, but they really separate themselves with two excellent alternates.

    Tim Kelly @TimKellySports

I've always loved these cream Cardinals uniforms. For Saturday games played at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals don beautiful cream alternate threads (seen above) that have the s in "St. Louis" wrapped around the bat that the two perched birds are sitting atop.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals wear the powder blue uniforms seen atop the slide for most Saturday road games, something they've done since 2018.

The powder blue throwbacks are inspired by the team's primary road uniforms worn from 1976-1984. Certainly the Phillies have their own case, but the fact that the Cardinals still wear these as road throwbacks—while Philadelphia has made their old road uniforms a home alternate—may make these the best powder blue uniforms in the sport.

Overall, St. Louis has the best uniforms in the NL, and an argument can be made that its threads are the class of the sport overall.

1. Oakland Athletics

For everything that's wrong with the Oakland Athletics franchise—which is, well, just about everything—it has an iconic color scheme that still pops in what may be its waning days in the Bay Area.

The Oakland Coliseum has long since passed what should have been it's expiration date, but there's something about a bright sunny day at the once-vibrant stadium where the A's are rocking their white home uniforms that read "Athletics" across the front in a cursive script.

Their green caps with yellow brims and "A's" written on the front don't get mentioned enough in the conversation for best caps not only in the sport today, but ever.

On the road, the A's have one of the better gray jerseys in the sport, with the "Oakland" script across the front. For away games, Oakland makes the switch to a darker shade of green for its cap, with yellow trim around the white "A's" on its hats.

Still, the best uniform in the A's rotation is unquestionably their Kelly Green "Oakland" uniforms (top of the article), which features a matching Kelly Green cap and works both as a home and road alternate. If someone said that was the best jersey in baseball today, it would be hard to disagree.

Worth knowing if you're a baseball historian is the incredible story of how the elephant became associated with the A's franchise, and it is now featured on the sleeves of the three jerseys mentioned above.

On one hand, the A's franchise began play in 1901, previously calling both Philadelphia and Kansas City home. It would be a shame if it relocates to Las Vegas if it doesn't take the A's brand with it given that it's hardly a guarantee Oakland would ever get another team.

On the other hand, the A's have called Oakland home since 1968, and it would be even sadder for the diehard fans there to see owner John Fisher steal their franchise and also assure that even if the town ever gets a team again, it would need an entirely different brand.
